I've been gone from USM for some time now, and have been keeping up with events through this board, including some of the athletic 'side-bars' that pop up. In the latest issue of Sports Illustrated (the one with George Mason University basketball on the cover), there was an item in the "Faces in the Crowd" column, which caught my attention.
"Jasper Johnson, Hollandale, Miss > Basketball. Johnson, a senior center at Delta State, was named Gulf South Conference player of the year . . ."
Wasn't he one of the basketball players formerly on scholarship at USM, who was "run off" by Coach Eustachy?
I think I read where Jasper Johnson was in the running for national player of the year in that division. Is that a fact, and if so, have the results been announced?

He was recently named National Player of the Year. It was on a recent thread here I think.

That is great. He is a fine young man and well deserving. I bet that Coach Eustachy was rooting for him to get that honor. That is just the kind of guy he is.
JJ was just awarded the Howell Trophy....best collegiate player in the state (probably a first, told he no longer had a scholarship at a Div I school, goes to Div II and name state's best player)
If LSM was still running the PR machine she'd find a way to spin JJ's accomplishment into a Southern Miss brag point.
