This plan puts an untenured assistant professor's position at risk (1 of 2). The Hattiesburg program is rumored to be on life support, and the chord is twisted around Doty's ankle at the moment. Didn't tell the chair, huh? That's nothing. Our dept chair (in CoB) took off for Sweden for an "extended period" and didn't tell his faculty. What about that, Mr. Fung?
Purpose The purpose of this policy is to establish guidelines for faculty teaching loads for tenure, tenure track, and instructor level positions and faculty holding administrative appointments. Policy • Faculty teaching assignments are the responsibility of the department chair in consultation with the faculty member and the dean. • Tenured faculty may elect to pursue a teaching track or a research track with approval from the department chair, dean, and provost. Tenure track faculty must be assigned to the research track. Teaching Track: Tenured faculty approved for the teaching track must teach four classes (16 credit hours) per semester for fall and spring semesters. Research Track: Faculty on the research track are expected to teach three courses a semester (12 credit hours or the equivalent contact hours) and maintain an active research agenda. An active research agenda is defined as initiating or conducting a project with specific outcomes. It is the responsibility of the department chair to monitor achievement of the outcomes. When a faculty member is awarded external grant funds for research, adjustments will be made in teaching responsibilities proportional to the level of funding received. • Full-time instructors are expected to teach eight courses (24 credit hours or the equivalent contact hours) in the academic year (fall and spring). • Summer teaching assignments are for instructional purposes only unless exceptions are approved by the provost. • Department chairs are expected to teach two classes per year. • Academic administrators above the chair level holding faculty rank are expected to teach one class per year. • Department chairs may elect to release faculty members from teaching for administrative duties, to develop a research proposal, or to work on a major service project with approval of the dean and provost.
The document indicates that under newly proposed rules the chairs would teach 2 per year. My guess is that they teach less or the same now.? This particular chair almost certainly teaches less now.
BTW, I added the bold font to highlight the part of this memo that has Doty on the run.

Policy--Academic administrators above the chair level holding faculty rank are expected to teach one class per year...

This is probably a foolish question but since I don't know anything about Doty, I don't know whether you're kidding. If you are serious, what's his objection to teaching? For that matter, why would Grimes and Moore object to entering a classroom? There were three Nobel laureates on the Southwestern Medical School faculty when I was there and they all taught one course per year, often two. I should add that they were excellent in the classroom, and among the most approachable, humble professors I encountered.
For whatever reason, Doty can't seem to stand being around students. Oh, and I'm told that the "extended period" in the other post above means "more than 2 weeks." What does that sound like?

Austin Eagle did you have a course with Joe Goldstein at Southwestern? A very pleasant fellow...

Yes, and Michael Brown as well. They co-taught a great course in medical biochemistry to lowly medical students, as well as a couple of very high octane graduate courses. Both are very pleasant and seemed down-to-earth from my perspective. Goldstein was more student oriented, and more gregarious. Their third big gun at the time was a chemist, Johann Deisenhofer. I had very little contact with him outside the classroom. He struggled a bit with English, and seemed shy. According to the alum newsletters, they have a couple more Nobel "winners" in house now. I guess one might say they're aiming to be 'wurl class.

Don't worry about the MIS program on the Coast. I would have suspended it this Summer myself if it were still going. USM has a long tradition as Mississippi's Business school. That tradition will be carried on in Oxford as Ole Miss assumes leadership in business management. The campus in Oxford is poised for the move, and citizens of this State will be forever grateful to USM for laying the foundation that will support the mansion.

Was anything ever done to Bill Gunther for teaching at Alabama while being an administrator at USM? Whatever that answer was, that probably is your "Sweden" answer as well. What it should be is obvious: if this chair is teaching or consulting while being paid by USM, without taking leave time, it is blatantly wrong. S/he should have to take the full leave time, forfeit the salary for the period, or donate the money to USM. Ethically, s/he should then resign. Even if done in ignorance, this is so obviously wrong that the chair should have known it was wrong; it is even worse if done with knowledge it is wrong. Where are the associate dean and dean to disapprove this action and supervise the situation? Who is covering the chair's classes? Was USM money used for the travel?

Some on here said Bill taught at Auburn, while others said he did pro bono work for Nicholls State. Others even had stories about AACSB work at South Alabama. I don't think that was ever cleared up, was it?
Are you saying that the Dean, who is using 1/2 of a $110,000 salary line for travel this year, is responsible for supervising this activity? How's that done?

It is possible, though no one in the college was ever heard of a connection to Sweden. Maybe it is new. Maybe there is none. If there is no such deal, what do you say?

Then I'd have to wonder how one can leave a full time position for two weeks or so for outside employment
Several business profs (about 6) were gathered in the ante room of an office suite having a conversation, some time around Oct of 2003, shortly after Doty arrived. One of them, a single father, was explaining to the group how he and/or his 8/9 year old daughter had misplaced a several pairs of new bluejeans. He was stating that they had checked the washer and dryer, the closet, the dresser, etc., but couldn't find them anywhere. It was just before this point that Doty walked up to the doorway of the anteroom. Without hesitation he asked (paraphrase), "Have you checked the neighborhood boys' bedrooms?" Everyone sat in stunned silence for a few seconds, when the single father retorted (paraphrase) "She's only 8/9 years old, Dean." At that point Doty replied (paraphrase) "I hear they start 'em young in Mississippi." Doty immediately walked away at that point, as if he'd gotten off a zinger that everyone would surely buckle over in tears with. Again, stunned silence. At that point one of the faculty members asked the single father, "Did he just call your daughter a slut?" One of the 6 faculty members is a notorious administrator toadie, going back almost 30 years. This person immediately went into damage control mode for Doty, saying (paraphrase) "Nah .. Nah . . Nah, he didn't mean it that way. . .Nah . . Nah . . he was just trying to be funny . . . Nah . . Nah . . Nah . . now don't go spreading that interpretation around. . . . ."
The story is now legendary, as much as the press agent is at his job....

It's not hard to figure out who the toady is. Has anyone relayed this to Frank Pickering? It sure supports his contentions.
