Psychology, in some ways you aren't alone. I was informed a minute ago that, although economics is being allowed to fill their 3 slots, apparently no one wants them. And that's the case even without telling applicants that they will not have G.A.s. Such is the state of USM these days.
Economics just given the "no, not now" by a candidate. Taking an offer with a 1/1 load the first year, and 2/1 for years after that. Can also get funding for 3 international conferences per year, and salary equivalent to USM offer. Also getting large amount of research-related resources.
This is what we were talking about last week. Look at the teaching load being offered this new hire. 1/1 and 1/2 --- why can't USM support our PhD program that way?

Ooo-can I transfer over to your department? Keep in mind that one of the few psychologists to win the Nobel did so for his contribution to economics!

The candidate did NOT take the USM offer. The offer he TOOK was from another school offering the 1/1 first year and the 2/1 thereafter, along with "unlimited" funding for research and 3 international conferences per year, and a REAL Dean.
HAD he taken the USM offer, he would have a 2/2 load the first year and a 3/3 load thereafter, with $900 for travel (per year) and limited research support (paper clips, etc.), and a PRETEND Dean. The $900 translates to well less that 0.5 international conferences per year (i.e., one every 3 years).

Careful now, Bus Driver. If Econ trys to come even close to this, they too will be blasted by Jay "Sufficiently Deranged" Grimes, and his Greek Chorus, SCM and Dumb as a Broom.

It's not unusual for departments elsewhere to give a course reduction to new faculty members in order to help ensure that they will hit the ground running. It's been done by at least one department at usm.

I don't know....the older I get, the better satisficing looks to me.
Part of simon's theory of decision making. Satisficing means we tend to do a sequential search and evaluation of alternatives, and we select the first alternative which minimally (satisfactorily) seems to meet our decision objectives. Optimizing, a better decision process, involves searching for all feasible alternatives, then evaluating them simultaneously, to arrive at an optimal decision.

Tell me, O.O., do you think the IHL uses Satisficing or Optimizing in making their decisions (e.g., the MSU presidential search).
I'm reasonably confident that USM has never had a nobel laureate among its ranks or we would be hearing about it ad nauseum in the PR releases and in student recruiting. But have we ever had a National Acdemy of Science member on the faculty?

No, but USM's next athletic director has a degree from the United States Sports Academy. Does that count?

The guy with the remaining outstanding offer asked for a deadline extension --- from today to Monday --- to provide his answer. Not the mark of someone itchin' to come on board.

Might she be the same person who interviewed here earlier and withdrew from consideration after feeling the love - especially on the second floor - in the CoB? If so, it makes you wonder what could have changed.

Will this result in more unneeded Management hires?
