reasons why PUCers won't puke the PUC
Permalink Closed

Reasons why PUC members won't quit, even though they've been asked to do so by almost everyone.  Which one fits you?

LIST GIVEN IN THE FIRST PERSON

1. I believe I'm doing good for USM.  By staying on the PUC, and working with the other members and the President to improve communications and heal the institution, I'm doing the right thing.

2. I am not only pro-SFT, I'm directly on "the team" as it were, and by staying on the PUC and making it work, I'm helping the man I support.

3. Though I am not on "the team" directly, I am pro-SFT, and by staying on the PUC and making it work, I'm helping the man I support.

4. Though I am not necessarily pro-SFT, my presence on the PUC could be beneficial to my USM career.  Also, if I make some public statements that a pro-SFT, I could get a good mid-year raise next time, even if that means my Dean overlooks me and the SFT team adds my name to the list of the top 10%.

5. Though I am not necessarily pro-SFT, my presence on the PUC is beneficial to my Dean, and by helping him/her make this look good, I'll get a good service rating and will buck for a good raise next time.  My name will make it on the original top 10% list via my Dean, even though I may not be vocal at all in support of the SFT team.

6. I was placed on the committee, hesitatingly went to the first meeting, became a rallying point for the campus, and now I don't want to give up my position of influence and importance on campus.

7. PUC membership will look good on my resume, and boost my chances in the business community after graduation by helping SFT make this body work (mainly a reason for student members).

8. A 2-hour PUC meeting every 10 days or so gets me out of the office and away from my boss(es) and the faculty for a while.  Kind of like a 2 hour paid break, and I don't even have to do anything but sit there and enjoy the back-and-forth banter (mainly a reason for staff members).

9. I am on the committee, there are only 18 of us (faculty), and Thames knows my name now.  If I get off, I might face recriminations (i.e., I scared to leave).  (Mainly a reason for faculty and staff members).

10. I'm from the deep South, and like most I believe in God.  The PUC is the Lord's will, thus my service is God's work.

11. I love committee work, thus PUC service is right in my wheelhouse.

12. I am an activist at heart, and the PUC was like hitting the activist lottery.  Go, fight, go!

13. I like the chance of being on t.v. and quoted in the papers.  Why should Myron Henry get all the face time?

14. President Thames is fine/fly!  Who would want to miss out on the chance to be near him for two hours every week or so?

15. I'm doing a research project (e.g., writing a book) on this whole mess, and this is just another chapter --- and one I have a personal part to play in.

16. I am single, and this seemed like a place to meet other single professionals with similar interests.  Besides, I'm boycotting Mahogany, so I had to look elsewhere.

Of course, multiple reasons may apply, as well as others not listed here.

#16 looks pretty  good.  Can former employees be on the committee?  Of course I never went to Mahogany anyway, but no one needs to know that - -

Pretty good list.  Did you include "I am a staff member and my job/retirement/health insurance is at risk if I leave?"

Thanks, LVN.  I think #9 gets at your question.

Options #1 and #2 sound like ones Tammy Wynette might make. Stand by your man. No, I think it was Hillary who said that. Rats, I don't know. But it was one or the other.

2. I am not only pro-SFT, I'm directly on "the team" as it were, and by staying on the PUC and making it work, I'm helping the man I support.

No, Hillary said something more to the effect of: "I'm not a Tammy Wynette 'stand-by-your-man' kind of woman."  Sort of the opposite sentiment, though she did indeed stand by her man, in the final analysis.

(NB:  I'm reading Hillary's autobiography right now...a fascinating read regardless of your politics--did you know that she started out as a Republican and supported Goldwater back in the day?).

I am a staff person. My boss, the dean, told me I would represent the staff of the college. I wasn't asked, I was told/ordered to represent my college. You expect me to disobey an order from by boss? Even tenured faculty could be fired for that.

Yes, I hope we all bear this in mind. All of these people were appointed; none of them campaigned for a position. Nobody would be happier than me to see the PUC disbanded, but we must quit expecting other people to fall on their swords for us. It is entirely unreasonable for us to expect these people or F&G to die for our sins. Any one of us could make an appointment with Shelby to ask him to resign. Whatever reasons you have for not doing so surely applies to the people on the PUC. Hang in there, Otherside- we’re all on the same side.

Thank you so much for saying something that has really needed to be said for quite some time.

This is especially true for the people on this and the old board who have passionate feelings and pure motives but are dealing with this from a distance with incomplete information and no personal consequences.

All true: but I bet few people know that people were "appointed" and do not feel that they can refuse. How incredibly unfortunate for staff people to be put in that kind of position.

By the way, an interesting question came up the other day: are all of the staff people from academic units only? There does not seem to be represntation from non-academic areas i.e. physical plant, the police force etc.

I wonder how that affects the "diverse" points of view the Presdent says he wants.
