"The feelings expressed by alum are more widespread than you think. I know several polymer science alums (from the BS level to the Ph.D.) and though they of course feel that they got a good experience and most have gone on to good jobs, they look back with horror to what is happening to their department. It is indeed one man's empire and cash cow rather than a truly widely respected and rising department."
Are "the feelings" widespread among the ones he brought back?

It is amazing that the restictions against hiring alumni doesn't apply to Polymer Science. Perhaps it is because their graduates are trained in the "see no evil, hear no evil, say no evil"?
what's wrong with hiring our own. I give all the kudos to Shelby for his wise and efficient management.
As to the 'polymer' poster, I can spot an imposter. Things have never been better and the program will continue to be the premier program at Southern, and in the state of Mississippi for that matter.
Since when do the liberals in COAL speak for the real scientists in COST? I have never seen a bunch of liberals whine like COAL and business. If I were in COAL, I'd take the crumbs you stole from business, and do your work.
This board needs to get over its jealousy of the superiority of Polymer Science.
Believer, ask the scientists who know -- who are at better places (anywhere other than MS) and holding good jobs. The polymer program here is falling fast -- not judged by "liberals" in COAL -- but the people whom you seem to respect -- businessmen and scientists. Do some research and find out! Running a university like an efficient business might have some merit -- but SFT is far from ever having done that.

Just saw this when doing a search - "Imposter"? - Don't think so.
"thamesbeliever" is obviously not an imposter but one with delusions about other things in life. There are problems, and sticking one's head in the sand doesn't make them go away.
Proud to be an alum but want to ensure it stays a department to be proud of.
