For the past few years, USA has played some home games at "The Hank" ---- Hank Aaron Stadium. Prior to that, the Jaguars played exclusively at Stankey Field, named for former major leaguer and former USA head coach (and college coach of current skipper Steve Kittrell) Eddie Stankey. USA is a commuter college, serving the Mobile metropolitan area, but it has done a few things right. First, Kittrell has been the head man at USA since at least the mid-1980's. Through thick and thin, the administration has not wavered in its support for the coach. He's a class act who keeps his (and his program's) nose clean. Second, USA has a realistic view about where it fits in the grand scheme of things. USA fields a competitive team in a mid-major conference and contends for conference championships based on coaching, hard work, and the ability to recruit diamonds in the rough. There have been a few trips to the NCAA regionals, but never a trip to the college world series, and that's OK. USA knows it doesn't pump enough money into its program to achieve that kind of goal. They have a program, a coach, and a team they can be proud of and the fans and alums seem satisfied with that.
Last week I walked over to the baseball stadium and caught the first six innings of USM v Nicholls State. What better thing to do on a sunny Wednesday. There was a good crowd--lots of school-age kids with their parents. These are the things that make H'burg and USM very pleasant places.
