"D" --- exactly.  If you believe that there won't soon be a change over in JGH's executive suite then you are mistaken.  First the AD will sink the D, then deal with the errant faculty members after that.  Hold on, the end is near.

Can someone catalogue all of the things DHD said to faculty in there one on one meetings with him shortly after his arrival?  It would be nice to have them all in one place, like this thread.

Sorry, "pardon me too" for hijacking your thread in support of the AD.

He had the effrontery to suggest that not all peer-reviewed journals were of equal merit and that in order to raise the research reputation of the college faculty should attempt to publish in higher quality "A" journals, even if that meant sacrificing quantity in "C" journals or below.  This is the oft-mentioned "kick to the crotch" that alienated some faculty who have made it their mission ever since to oppose him.  It's about bruised egos.  Then, there's the lost colleague who was told "congratulations" when he received a better offer at a better place, without a salary match from the current dean.  Of course, he'd gotten a matching offer just the previous year from the past dean.  Add to this the fact that Doty is the first non-economist in the college's history to be dean and some people feel their department can no longer exert its controlling influence on the college - hence some of the interdepartmental bickering going on. It's past time for these faculty to take some responsibility for their actions and the college dysfunction they create no matter who sits in the dean's office.  People who say they care for the college but don't help to make it a better place are simply self-serving, or worse.

I just had to weigh in here. It has nothing to do with departmental anything, and it has very little to do with bruised egos. I am sure that junior faculty really liked being told that Doty would "fire [their] a$$[es]" at their 3rd year review if they did not get a 'premier A level' publication or that their target journals were "bull$hit." Publishing in an 'premier A level' journal within 3 years would mean competing with top business schools and would be a real stretch for a school like USM, which offers almost zero support for research. Some of the journals Doty referred to as "bull$hit" are considered 'A level' at many good business schools. Exactly how much threatening and use of profanity is acceptable in a dean's first meeting with his new faculty? That's the way to get people motivated, just keep on telling them they're crap. Leadership's more about how things are done than just what's done. It's not econ and fin alone. The top two publishing accountants got similar treatment. Haven't heard any stories about the other areas.

If you think the ECO and FIN faculty's publications are not up to standard, then you can walk right up and tell them to their faces. Faculty from that department have departed can be reached in locales such as Louisville, KY (Louisville); Pullman, WA (Washington State); Lubbock, TX (Texas Tech); Oswego, NY (SUNY-Oswego); or Oxford, MS (Ole Miss). Some even have chaired professorships. Not too shabby for a department that is deficient in research.

should read "...have departed and can be reached..."
