It has been recognized for a couple of millenia that plain talk is more appropriate for teaching and explaining than for moving people to virtuous action.

Because the Royal Society (founded 1660) attempted to purge figuration from scientific language, we've gotten the mistaken idea that prose can be a transparent window between us and reality. It can't. Language is always a negotiation.
