Just found out tonight. Sara Freedman, the new Dean at Oklahoma State (from Mississippi State), will bring Harold Doty to Stillwater with her as Associate Dean. As I was informed, she has been a close confidant of Doty's throughout the Thames fiasco. Having just gotten back home to see that Ken Malone is the new CFO, I'm sure Doty would never have a better time to get out than now. Good luck and congrats to him on his move up and away from USM.
Oklahoma State colleagues: how did this happen?? Yet, Maybe he'll thrive in the land where he can "sit and talk and watch a hawk making lazy circles in the sky."The state of Oklahoma has done some wonders for ex-patriots of the Mississippi system.
there's no way the b-school faculty could be this lucky. little harold purports to be a good friend of freedman's. one has to wonder if she would trust him to be her ass. dean. how many job opportunities will it take to get the hattiesburg napoleon out of here?
Pure malarkey, of course, but at a salary of $240,000* it is probably an attractive #2 job. *Biz associate deans make 80% of their dean's salary on average and Dean Freeman's new salary is $300,000.
There is plenty of Boone Pickens money to go around.
What is the status of the other deans now? Has Gandy tried to leave? I know his wife was a spousal hire (without ever submitting her to a votebyf her department), so it might be hard to get two positions. Is he one of the inner gang?
Is Pood still trying to leave? Is he on the inside with Thames?
CoBBers, don't get excited too fast. The infamous overconfidence is showing up in recent phone queries about the opening that now exists in Starkville. It's happening now and will possibly derail the opportunity.

After calling on some contacts, both local and distant, I think the original post is high quality. It is amazing to think about.
There's more to come with this story. It looks as if Doty is blowing a good shot to get out of USM. The opportunity Dean F. is presenting him is better than what he's trying to grab. He may end up with neither.

You mean it was offered and was turned down? Doesn't seem very smart decision. All these guys are tainted--and the situation at USM is widely known.
So much has happened since I posted about Sara Freedman's move to Oklahoma State, and Harold Doty's involvement in it. Many of the details in my first posting, given to me by my source, have been substantiated here and elsewhere, so I feel good about providing more information as it arrives.
From what I have heard, Doty politely declined the offer to move to Stillwater as Associate Dean at OSU. I know I, and many of you, would have loved to see Doty escape the Thames detail, and join many of the other fine faculty who have departed to calmer seas. Well, he may just yet. From what I was told he has decided to remain in Mississippi to seek the Dean of COBI position at MSU left vacant by Freedman. And, he has other confidants to turn to for assistance --- who on this board knew he was close to Crofts? This may work out. Let's wish him luck in seeking this post.
Before any speculation begins about Doty's replacement, there may be no need for one. During the year of the USM Presidential search, a local interim will fill the slot. And, another chapter to the story is that Commissioner Meredith is supposedly telling insiders that he would like to see an additional, small reorganization at USM that would reduce the current 5 colleges to only 4. The only colleges exempt from further reorganization in the plan are COST and COAL. That means that business deans may not be necessary for USM to function in the very near future.
since i know that Doty reads this message board, and i know it because he talks to others about what he sees rumored about himself on this board, Doty is this last message yours??!

It has to be.
To get the State job, Doty would have to be a long-time friend of Lott, Cochran, and everyone else in power in this state. He may have to be all that to keep his job here. He would bring nothing to State except the chaos, uncertainty, and the same passive-aggressive nonsense he is known for here. Please go and help ruin State like you did USM. I bet they are just waiting for Syracuse stories that do not relate to the topic. Best of all, they are "up north", so you should like it better. They probably have a bigger "booze fund" too.
This point has been made by others, and it's probably true: the only way the current crop of deans can escape is by stepping back to a lower position at a better school. If Mr. Doty did in fact get an offer at OSU and turned it down, he was very, very foolish. You gentlemen had best become realistic. You are damaged goods. You should decide what is more important: your sanity, career and family, or your perceived "power" and meaningless title at this little backwater. Or as granddaddy would put it, ya best git while the gittins good.
The only shocking thing from this whole scenario, if indeed any of it is true, is that Freedman would think enough of Doty to hire him as her Assoc Dean.
Also, would it be normal or even appropiate for a newly hired dean, who will not report for duty some time in summer, to make offers for an Assoc Dean without any other faculty/university input? It sounds stupid to me, if nothing else a bad PR move for a new Dean. Maybe she and Digital Doty have a lot in common.
I'm sure Doty is holding out for the premier Digital MBA program in the state of MS, where not many have computers.
In conclusion, it is obvious to me that anyone can get a PhD, especially from schools like UT-Austin. There is no connection between theory and practice.

Isn't Doty trying to get the Dean's job at Louisiana Lafayette?
I can provide some info here. Doty originally sponsored Barry Babin's application for ULLa Dean. Now, the story is that he may want that action for himself. Not sure what the status of Babin's candidacy there is. Don't think he made the first cut, but not sure. He has no administrative experience to speak of.
