"there will be no one in the way of redirecting funds to pet projects and personal friends"
Puh-lease. Are we to believe that all that stood between Katrina funds and SFT's pet projects was Gregg Lassen, his pet monkey? Stop huffing those PowerPlant fumes, open up your door, and step into the light, DD!
I did have one person in a departmental administrative position comment to me that at least GL "had a clue" unlike others in the Dome; this person had several other positive comments about him, which unfortunately I don't recall well enough to repeat.

Working with the CFO: Wisdom from the Business World (Professional Development)
Lassen, a former senior executive with Amoco, left Chicago and the Business Sector and came to Higher Ed and Hattiesburg, Mississippi. One of his first moves at USM was to change his job title from VP to CFO. He will offer a perspective valuable for the advancement professional on effective collaboration with the CFO resulting in mutually satisfactory outcomes.
Presenter: Gregg Lassen, Chief Financial Officer, The University of Southern Mississippi
For real? Where does this leave us in terms of the Dome Body Count since the Glamser/Stringer debacle? (Angie Dear=gone, Jack "Hack" Hanbury=gone, Marky Mark D.=gone, Lisa MaderMath=gone, Tim "I'll be back" Hudson=gone, Kenny Boy "Job Snowball" Malone=stripped of power...and now, Gregg "No, really, I'm a grad student" Lassen=gone). Who am I missing? Oh, right, Shelboo=gone in 2007!
stinky, surely you jest. What possible qualifications does KM have to be CFO? And who will take over leadership of his department? If true, however, it shows that SFT really really is running low on henchpeople.
Malone being chair of a department (other than polymer science) poses a SACS problem. SACS takes the position that department chairs and program directors have to have a terminal degree in the area, and to not have one requires a portfolio review and justification.
HATTIESBURG Dr. Shelby F. Thames, president of the University of Southern Mississippi, announced today that Chief Financial Officer Greg Lassen has resigned his position.
Greg Lassen has served the university with dedication and excellence, Thames said. He will now return to Texas where he can be closer to family members.
Lassen has been at the university for two-and-a-half years and has spent his career in higher education and private industry. His last day will be Feb. 24.
I am proud to have been a part of Southern Miss and have enjoyed the experience of enhancing campus facilities and bringing new business approaches to the university, Lassen said.
Notable projects on campus led by Lassen include the student malls, pedestrian walkways, and expansive building projects, including the Student Union addition that is set to open this summer and the successful outsourcing of food service and book store operations.
Added Thames: I want to thank Greg for his innovative and fiscally prudent approaches that have advanced our university. He has given much to make Southern Miss a better place. He will be missed.
Talk about loss of institutional memory! How unfair of the HA to credit Mr. Lassen with projects which have been in the works for years. It would have been simple enough to credit him with "carrying forward the long-standing projects" or some such language.

But isn't being a boy wonder & SFT grad student sufficient justification?

Shelby does make mistakes in his own other worldly reality in addition to those perceived from the outside.

LVN is quite right...these projects were long ago in the works before Gregg "Pet Monkey" Lassen even knew where Hattiesburg, MS was on the map. For shame, H'burg American...
in all fairness to the HA and Lassen, if you read carefully it says "special to the american." that means it was a USM press release--i read it on USM talk. the american didn't write the story--it wasn't a story at all. in all fairness to Lassen, he didn't write the press release and it doesn't say he initiated any of the projects--it said he led them--and that is probably factually true since the CFO is the person responsible to those physical plant projects.
The Hattiesburg American is and will remain a joke. No real reporting -- all they do is ask a few inane questions and then quote you directly as "news" or accept "specials to the American" straight from USM. Also they have a very bad habit of mangling the quotes that they are given. Add to that the fact that News 7 is strictly bush league as well. I saw their Katrina video -- boy what a joke. Just a compilation of their "so and so place needs diapers" reports rather than any investigation, context, compelling photos -- anything. Don't waste your money on it and don't waste your money on the American.
Yes, GL appears to be one of the most competent members of the administration, which says more about them than about him. I've heard that he is among the least ethically challenged. However, All the administrators from dean on up share in the responsibility for the damage that has been done. Silence is not a virtue. Looking the other way or hiding under a desk does not reduce culpability. It increases it. GL's departure suggests that he may be a man of integrity whose limits were reached.
