I've seen lots of negativity here. Many of USM's dismalfailures and mistakes during the past three years have been described ad naseum. The mass exodus of faculty. The attempted exit of deans. SACS probation. USM on the USNews 4th tier list. Inflated enrollment figures. Locking the doors of faculty offices. Email altercations. Embarrasing the university at a national level in an inappropriate attempt to fire two professors. Nursing's national board pass rate sinking to lowest in the state. And many more too numerous to cite here.
It's time to look at the positive goals of this administration and how those goals have been accomplished. We're all aware of the the goal of attaining a student enrollment of 20,000. Although the pre- Katrina figures show that USM's enrollment is downward in slope, the official post- Katrina figures have not yet been reported; so for the sake of argument we'll just say the jury is still out on that particular goal. But I'll be watching attentively and optimistically when the offical new enrollment figures are reported and the 20,000 goal is accomplished.
I would greatly appreciate viewers specifying any goal, apart from the 20,000 enrollment goal, and specify how it has been met. Goals or projects which were planned or initiated prior to the current regime don't count.

Surely you jest. The most optimistic figure I've heard is a decline of 800-1000, although I don't know if that is Hburg only, or if that includes the Coast. What you need to be more worried about, as an experienced source pointed out to me recently, is the major decline in enrollment at MGCC et. al. from whence we get a goodly number of transfers. It may be next year before USM feels the real impact of Katrina on enrollment.
LVN, a good point indeed. Don't forget that PRCC's enrollment has also declined by over 1000 students, one of the two major feeder schools for USM. And conservative estimates of decline for Spring is at 3000 fewer for GP and Hattiesburg. AY 06-07 might be worse still.
I thought of something we now have, coffee in the library. But then, maybe not. I still feel really awkward drinking coffee in such a sacred place, I recall as a student back in the old library being asked to spit out my gum before I came in by the little grey haired lady who checked books at the door (she was our pre sensor foolproof system for keeping books IN the library). Never mind, I can't think of any positives, sorry. Except that my key still works for my office door
The goal of making USM well known across the nation has been met. It is now very well known to readers of the Chronicle for Higher Education (Probation) and U.S. News (The drop to fourth tier).
