Southern Miss, Toxin Alert awarded $2 million for work on food safety product

...“Toxin Alert has developed polymer-based sensors that enable rapid, inexpensive and simple detection of pathogens, select agents and other potential bio-terror substances,” said Southern Miss President Shelby Thames. “The applications of this technology in homeland security are numerous and include rapid bio-screening of food supplies, rapid detection of airborne pathogens such as anthrax and bio-secure packaging of blood and food supplies.”...

Ya know, that's an interesting thought. How come Shebby doesn't start his own company and leave us alone? He could pay himself whatever he wanted to, hire anybody he wanted to, not be bothered with pesky SACS, NCATE, etc. and so on. Plus he could draw his USM pension. The benefits seem endless. Wonder why he hasn't done it?

It may be because USM supplies him space and cheap labor.  In the future the "commercialization park" will supply "businesses" with bulidings built with public (pork) funds for their labs.
