...“We need to try to restrain the ‘We don’t care how you all done it up North’ syndrome,” Doty said. “We need to steal good ideas and build on the many positive values we have.”
Too bad Doty falls victim to faulty reasoning. Rather than suggest a real fix for education funding (like increased property taxes), he suggests the politically correct "solution" of cigarette tax hikes. Way to go, Harold. Since studies show that cigarette smoking is more prevalent among lower-wage earners and the less educated, you are suggesting a highly regressive tax as the fix-it for education. "Come to Mississippi, folks, where the poor pay to educate the children of the rich!"
It should be obvious that Harold Doty subscribes to the NIMBY point of view: Not In My Back Yard. He doesn't smoke, so cigarette taxes are A-OK. However, he would never suggest a property tax increase, since he lives in the ritzy Canebrake neighborhood and, like most Canebrake residents, can barely afford to live there as it is. More taxes on property might force him to have to make a move down to Woodstone.
Is this Doty's first effort at gaining support for a run at the USM presidency? If you can't get a dean's job at another school, you might as well move up in the septic tank you're in now.
Can't wait for the full story in tomorrow's edition. Too bad there was no web camera feed, like there was during his visit to Tampa. I'd bet there were plenty of whoppers that we'll never hear about.
Doty is a real piece of work. He thinks he's the smartest person ever to live in Mississippi. Those local folks were lucky to be in his presence, even if only for a few moments.
"Doty, a Kiwanis member himself, also encouraged the growth of a large regional economic development group that would encompass South Mississippi, from the Coast to Jackson."
This line above is also interesting. Since kicking Ken Malone out of his college, Doty now supports online education AND economic development agencies. What gives?
People kill other people; the instrument used varies with respect to opportunity, skill and means to purchase capital goods (guns, knives, swords, cars, poison, explosives).

The taxes should be on these folks. They're sitting around smoking-not to mention overeating.People who pay property taxes usually are out working and already paying through the nose.
