Until Mississippi starts putting together a package of quality undergraduate and graduate programs along with some reasonable job opportunities, the better students will continue to leave. The current Brain Drain is simple reaping what we've sown...a society that places zero value on real achievement and tries to correct ugly statistics by buying its way out.
Mississippi doesn't have the population base to support an optometric school. It's questionable if we even have a need for a dental school or vet school. It's more cost effective to give a tuition supplement to vet and dental students attending out of state schools. Optometric care is on the periphery of health care. Their services are provided by medical doctors (ophthalmologists ) who also diagnose eye diseases and perform surgery. It's also a good idea for people to train out of state ,no matter where you live. It's an education in itself to see how other areas live and work.

USM has always seemed to operate under the principle that it should educate locals and hire locals. The best schools, on the other hand, do their darndest to attract students from all over the country; and they are pleased as punch when their graduates achieve recognition out of state.
