I was delighted to see Dr. Joe Parker heading up a bipartisan committee to help our city save money by raising the sales tax. Many people outside the academic community have a difficult time understanding these concepts and I think we should all be grateful for his expertise.
This is ugly and uncalled for. I know Joe, and while I disagree with him politically, I find him to be a person of integrity who has no particular ax to grind as far as local politics are concerned.

I agree completely;Joe Parker is top of the line. I do disagree with a 14% raise in sales tax at a time when the city is experiencing record sales tax collections.

Ditto on Joe.
I am undecided on the sales tax thing. Gotta have more information.
The record sales tax receipts are said to be due to all of the evacuees and hurricane workers currently in the Burg. Has anyone seen projections about whether this phenomenon will have legs? I figure the workers will be around a year or so, unless a new storm hits Florida or Texas next year where the pickin's might appear to be more attractive. Anybody have any idea how many of the coast and New Orleans folks will stick around?
The "14%" raise is a little confusing. Will the current tax be increased by 14% or will an additional 14% be added to the current tax?

It's always good to have a political scientist on hand. I would be grateful if he could lend his expertise to helping me understand the new Medicare Rx plan which some believe was politically driven.
