probably tired of fighting against the admin from the top down. The faculty seem to have no say in anything in a thames administration. he has surrounded himself with people who do not care about others, only their own agenda. it is hard for anyone in the colleges to even want to excel in an environment such as at USM now.
Its "put down" time now for those who opposed the on-line MBA courses. Sean Salter's public e-mail reprimand yesterday by the Associate Dean is the first example--demeaning and clueless.
Shame on the senior faculty who hid behind a junior colleague whom they allowed to take the lead when it came to opposing the on-line courses. Where I come from, junior faculty are protected.
Listen carefully, that sound you hear coming from CoB in not the failing HVAC system but rather the crisp sound of resumes rolling through laser printers. No exit strategy is not being considered.

Who are you talking about? Most of the senior faculty in the college supported the program and those senior faculty who didn't spoke out against it also.
Shame on people who threaten and intimidate junior faculty.
You are absolutely right! Who was it that said this? "I wish the Committee luck in facing the re-vote. The CoB, and many others at USM, are watching your ethics, fortitude, and heart. Please remember that this will guide how others treat you not just on this issue, but in every aspect for the rest of your time at USM." Oh yeah, one of your esteemed colleagues, Smoking Management. No threat or intimidation there.

I doubt smoking mgt can hold tenure or promotion over someone's head.

Mentors from the underground,
You obviously don't appreciate that this institutions is still coping with the "Stringer/Glamser purge." Not exactly an atmosphere that encourages dialogue, and who in central administration gives a flip if a junior (or senior) faculty is treated like a lackey instead of a professional?

Actually, a senior professor in management asked some others to publicly oppose the program so that this person would have some cover to work behind the scenes and bring it down.

Please don't lock my office door while I'm across campus without first letting me retrive my personal belongings.

Not quite. The senior faculty you mention worked with another person in an 11th hour diversion that pulled in some faculty (the "others" you mentioned). The second participant might surprise some in the college.
Close By and Almost There are both wrong, in a sense. The "plan" was a double-cross led by the senior management professor and the other. Both were in favor of the online courses, though one was secretly (to have the plan work).

You are correct, Dean, it obviously was not a threat or anything like it.
Since the entire committee acted as it did, you are happy, and everyone else knows who they are dealing with. Fact, not threat.
How about someone - anyone - trying leadership instead of bullying.
On the Graduate Council Minutes needed post, it was stated that the Graduate Council received the paperwork from COB for the online 500 AND 600 level courses. I thought all the discussion and vote was about 500 level courses only???
I am reminded of the person who posted about student cheating and suggested that if the student would channel all that creativity and energy into studying he wouldn't need to cheat. Imagine all this talent focused on making the CoB a better place?

Over the years many CoB profs have spent a large amount of time, effort, and energy trying to make the CoB a better place. These people have been thwarted at every turn by administrators who are power hungry and hold a personal agenda. Reports of junior faculty being bullied should surprise no one.
Such activity has been the norm for some time. Junior faculty have no voice in the college because they are intimidated if they speak out. Only financially secure full profs have the ability to stand up in the CoB and it has been this way since before Doty arrived.
Bill Gunther had some ability to keep the attack dog off young profs but Doty's enjoyment of the turmoil seems to outweigh his academic principles.

Whether or not the CoB will be a better place soon is being decided in Boca Raton, not Hattiesburg.

Mentors, would that "better place" be one where ALL junior faculty get to do their third year review in the fourth year, and not just some people?

Or maybe everyone gets a letter outlining the exact requirements for promotion?

We jus' good at cuttin' deals down in the bayou, yeah. Pretending to be supportive carries a lot of weight now. Rigor and research are old news. To The Top!

Pardoning Monday's actions, there are some in the CoB who would like to see "Associate" label removed and the current AD become simply "Dean." It would be much better than the current situation.
