"As the presidential search evolves at USM in 2006 to choose a replacement for the retiring Thames, the need to recruit a new president who can unite the university and who can continue the restoration of academic accountability is clear.
... USM must maintain pristine academic credentials. Maintaining SACS accreditation is, after all, only a benchmark of adequacy — not excellence."

Yeah, MS, I liked that quote, too. But I have reservations about describing USM as the "comprehensive university serving the state's most heavily-populated region." The C-L would never refer to either UM or MSU as serving a particular region of the state.

USM simply must shake the "let's not even try" attitude that has built up over the years.
Ms has no truly comprehensive universities. All of the big 3 are "comprehensive" in name only. The academic side of the institutions mirror the athletic side. It should be very interesting to watch the Presidential search at both campuses. Anybody that wants those jobs should be immediately disqualified (they are probably just looking to pick up $2 mil in 4 years) and anyone that could do it will have enough sense not to apply.

So, we need to decide who we want, and then kidnap them . . .

Boy, you got that one right. USM is getting torched primarily as a result of the apparently large percentage of the alumni that can't understand being humiliated. The only hope of changing that may be the basketball season.
