Due diligence is required in the future

http://www.hattiesburgamerican.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20051208/OPINION01/512080328/1014/OPINION

"While the quality of the academic programs at Southern Miss was never questioned - and the university's accreditation was never rescinded - doubts were raised about Thames' leadership. Moreover, Southern Miss' reputation suffered a blow when it became the first university in Mississippi since the 1940s to be placed on academic probation.

...Lest we forget, Southern Miss officials earmarked $500,000 at the beginning of this process to address SACS' concerns.

The entire ordeal has been costly, time-consuming for those who labored on this project, and a bit embarrassing for the Southern Miss family."
