Guess who's in town now...

My wife just called my cell to say that she just saw Brent Venables and some USM people having lunch downtown.  She's a huge CFB fan and thinks he is cute.

Who's Brent Venables? I'm not a movie fan.

That would be a huge "get" for USM...isn't he the DC for Oklahoma?

But we don't need a new defensive coordinator at USM. What we have now is just fine.

I can't imagine that Brent Venables would EVER come to USM--even for a huge salary.
Besides, this is a hoax.

Santa Claus is also coming to town.

I sure some of you will spot Elvis also. Seems like all some of you have to do is speculate. I am sure you don't work for USM. You would not have the time to spend on rumors.

I hope I have not been guilty of what I am chastising you for. If so, this message is for me too.

Wait until something happens.

Brent Venables has been mentioned as a successor to Bill Snyder at K-State.  Rumors were circulating yesterday that he was a shoo-in.   He will go to a major football program when he leaves OU--or at least one in a major conference.

Well, since everyone is throwing out names and speculating about coaches, Ken Hatfield (Rice 1-8) is available as of today.  He ranks #5 in wins of active coaches.  Looks like Ken got his contract bought out.

On the other hand, maybe Rice could scoop up Bower.  That would be nice.

Rice would be lucky to get a person like Bower. Win or lose, he'd be a hit with the fans and the student-athletes.

You are a lucky guy t-short.  How many of you guys have wives that would recongize the head coach, much less the D.C., of any university football program?  Makes me skeptical.

EagleTalk must have shut down from all the football talk on this board.

If the ET moderators are deleting threads dealing with this rumor, the rumor mongers have to come some place. And almost nothing is deleted around here, unfortunately.

Student-athletes -- interesting subject concerning Rice.  The sports pages in Houston are always commenting on the difficulty Rice has in signing top recruits because of their high academic requirements for entry into the school.

And the SAT scores of Rice students are out of sight.

Pssst.  Don't spread this around but my Grandmother swears she saw Johnny Vaught dining with Shelboo at Kentucky Fried Chicken the other evening,  and Thames picked up the tab.  This is incontrovertible evidence that Bower's on his way out,  and Vaught's moving in.

Now that BOGUS is fielding a virtual football team for the XBOX 360, we are proud to announce that we are close to signing Bear Bryant & Amos Alonzo Stagg as our co-coaches. Too bad, USM!

Oh yeah? Now that Johnnie Vaught has declined to relocate to south Mississippi,  insiders say Shelboo is determined to recruit "big names" Knute Rockne to replace Bower as USM at Hattiesburg head coach  and Pop Warner as the first USM at D'Lo coach.  Rumor has it he's already hired Angie D as his special recruiting emissary,  recognizing that she has charms many gents find irresistable.

On the news tonight on Okla. stations - Venables turned down the offer to be the head coach at K State. He will stay at the Univ. of Okla. Why in the world would the head coaching job at USM be  a step up from a person who turned down a major Big 12 head coach position.

End of the Venables speculation.
