Posters seem to go in attack mode when they feel threatened.  What is the real or percieved nature of the Bud Ginn threat?  So much of the rumors and innuendo are old - why bring up his involvement now when the website has been relatively quiet about him for two years?  Is it that he may become a candidate for the USM presidency?  Is it that he may influence the process?  Is it an issue of CoEP control?  USMGC control?  Was there a precipitating event?

Bud will be involved and influential in the selection of next USM president. He is the glue that holds the car guys, athletic guys, and "friends" of SFT and AKL together. Don't underestimate his behind the scenes involvement.

Has enough time past that we've forgotten his recent drive to control COEP?  What achievements are the result of his politics? Are we better for his influence? Yet again, the few get away with anything and everything. "Just do it. They remember nothing"

Re-member: There are some of us that are not aware of Ginn's effort to take over COEP.

When and how was this done? Fill us in on the details.

Ginn was a big influence on stopping the search for the dean, after Carl Martray, in the CoEP. He then got SFT to put Ole Willie in as dean, Willie may have been interim just as a front. Willie knows where his bread is buttered. Ginn then, post Ric Keaster, got his person named as Chair of ELR. The Ginn doctoral program then began to roll.

He has also had a nearly .46 job mediating the storms that the Thames gal has caused in her dept.

You might refer to Ginn as the CoEP Dean in Abstentia. Although, he has never been absent, just behind the sheets...I mean the scenes.

The coastal operation has been even more impacted by Ginn's influence. It is astounding what Ginn arranged and deranged on the coast. Somebody else needs to fill us in on this.

Come on Coast Watcher. Let us know.

It should come as no surprise that those of us who have had "dealings" with Ginn can not post our names. He's retaliatory and effective in thwarting academic careers. I echo what the previous poster said about him and his particular influence in the CoEP.

I understand in Westwood. Lost a career and something else in my innocent days in the Burg.

Ginn's influence in the department began with Keaster. After Keaster, Ginn's influence has grown when he has had his friends appointed as chair.

The number of dissertations that Ginn directed increased signifcantly. He has also had influence over the employment of new faculty members, some coming in as visiting professors, that became permanent. Hiring our own graduates is no longer a big deal. Getting his friends promoted or into new positions has been a common practice in the department and in CoEP. I think that if you look around you can probably say he has had an influence on employment practices campuswide.

Those of us in the CoEP who remember long for the days of the good ethics of chairs like Southerland, Bedenbaugh, and Anderson. None of these gentlemen would have allowed the department to be hijacked or influenced by a part-time person that just happened to be in the president's office. We have lost so many good faculty members that hardly anyone remembers.

I agree on Carl M. I mentioned Anderson. He served as Chair of ELR before he became Dean. He was a very ethical person, both professionally and personally.

CoEP seemed to go downhill after Anderson.

I am no longer at USM. Twenty years ago I had "dealings" with Dr. Ginn. I have moved to another in state institution. I still will not post my name. The long arm of Ginn and his network reaches beyond Hattiesburg.

I see that charges seem to keep coming regarding Bud Ginn. I have encouraged some of you in previous posts that I have made on this thread to lay off Bud. You are now at a point that you seem to be beating a dead horse. I know that many of you do not know him at all and you are listening to rumors and old tales. So unless you are willing to step forth with something new and use your name, you need to lay off.

Dear Mr. "Offer":

Your repeated posts have the same tone and content. They are mildly threatening and demanding. If you have information that refutes some of the anecdoctal accounts written here (which of course could be inaccurate-that is the nature of blogs) and you think this information is important to get out, you should post that information. If you stand by their validity, why don't you use your real name?

The readers of this thread, however, might be interested in your relationship with Dr. Ginn, and your interest in this thread, if you would be willing to share this information.

I have no interest in "beating a dead horse" (I hope you didn't intend this as a metaphor), but I must say that some of the many posts on this thread have been interesting (including yours).

Best wishes,

Mitchell E. Berman, Ph.D.

Dear Mitch:

You have some good points. However, if I revealed myself on this thread it would raise many eyebrows and even more questions.

My concern with the postings on this thread is that I know that many of them are based on heresay and/or rumor. For example, I know that no one really knows what Clyde's lobbying efforts were in relation to the USM Gulf Park science building. I know that sometimes legislators report what they think they know, but, legislators can be wrong.

Another concern of mine is that character asassination is very easy on this board. Posters can say anything, behind the cover of no name, as I am doing now, and no one can verify the truthfulness of the post. I know this is the nature of blogs but I hate to see a career of someone questioned if it is not in the light of day.

I will not ask your posters to lay off Dr. Ginn again. Just consider that if you had been in the administration of the university for over 30 years, what would you have on your record. I know he has many positive things he has accomplished.

Thanks again Mitch. Hope you never have to face an attack on yourself like Clyde has had with this thread.

Dear LO:

Actually, I have had my share of slams here. And the posts on this thread have been relatively mild compared to some I have seen. If you are a friend of Dr. Ginn's, don't fret too much about the negative posts. Like you said-you can't please everyone after a 30 year career.

I can tell one Bud story "on the air," because I can look back on it now with some humor and I was the target. The Dean of CoEP called me in to his office and told me Bud was "furious" with me. I couldn't figure out exactly what it was that got his ire up, much less why he would be concerned with a peon Associate Dean. Apparently, neither did the Dean. The Dean soon informed me that we were both to meet with Bud in Bud's office (a woodshed type of meeting it appeared). At that point I started to get pretty angry. Dr. Ginn was not dotted line, straight line, or squiggly line in my chain of command. My NY attitude was aroused, and I told the Dean (not so softly), that if Dr. Ginn had a bone to pick, he was welcome to come to my office to chat. That was the last I heard of it. I guess the Dean told Dr. Ginn that he had a crazy Yankee, or some such thing, in his employ and to let it lay for the moment. But I do look behind me when I walk past the Dome now (a cabinet member central to this administration told me fairly recently that Bud is still very angry with me).

I guess the point of the story is that the woodshed in the Dome has grown quite large in the past few years, and that this expansion has made USM a less comfortable place to work. Hence, I am now a recovering associate dean and enjoying every moment.

Best,

Mitch

Mitch, Congratulations on your promotion from Assoc, Dean to a real professional life. My question is, who followed you as Associate Dean? How was the person selected?

A Merdiith guy did work at NSTL for the College Board. You did not say it was Tom or Jim. I think it was Jim. Either way there is a connection to USM, Estees, and SFT. USM has had a relationship there for years.

See the public comments in the media that SFT had had to say about Estees.

One thread indicated that Bud had Lucas and Thames connections.

Is he the link that will bring the new Lucas (Milsaps) as president and the new D. Thames as Dean in Education and Psychology. Did Bud really name the new associate dean in ed-psy?

Does anyone want to do some homework on this?

I personally don't think that Bud can pull it off. Stranger things have happened at USM. Remember someone arranged for Shellboo to become our president.

Old Coastliner started this thread on November 25, 2005. It seems like Bud Ginn has been "a person of interest" to at least 297 posters (some posters posted more than once.) But, after this time, and all these postings, has anyone really answered the initial questions that I raised in my initial post?

I know that some of you have vented, aired dirty laundry, and been able to speculate about Bud and his power.

I know he has had power for nearly three decades. He has aligned himself with three presidents, Lucas, Fleming, and Thames. He was aligned by kinship to Lucas and his relationship with Thames goes back to the 1970's. He attached himself to Fleming and, as one or more posters have indicated, may have sacrificed Fleming for a better deal with Thames.

This thread may need to continue, it may not. I think it has served a purpose in identifying how power plays out behind the scenes.

I am interested in seeing who will be poster #300. There will be no prize for being #300.

Better days are ahead. Any political arrangement to select our new president will certainly be better than the last one.

I won't be 300th either, but I will say that when I was a professor at USM, Bud Ginn asked me to "spy" on a graduate student. Joe Paul was in the room when he asked me to do it. I said I'd "watch" but naturally did nothing because the idea was whacked, and the reason he was doing it was because he believed the grad student to be stalking the sorority girl daughter of a huge donor.  This really can't be disputed but I can't give my name because I'll use this incident to back my more serious problems with USM.
