SACS Prez stealth visit to usm

The following was published by Shelby's PR department. Seems like the faculty have been snubbed again. Even Krebs got to glad hand with the big cheeze from SACS...not so the leaders of Academic Council, Graduate Council or Faculty Senate....

Congratulations to the faculty members who busted their butts to salvage the sinking good ship Nitchampburg. You may have succeeded in helping to ensure a very long administrative stint and one perceived by the community as very successful. Oh, by the way, were you invited to meet the new SACS president Dr. Belle Wheelan on her recent tour of the campus? Perhaps that honor was reserved for the Academic Council, Graduate Council, and Faculty Senate. No?

Is it possible that Dr. Wheelan privately noted the absence of appropriate faculty? She visits a lot of campuses and surely knows what is "normal." Just a thought.

"We know USM is one of the top colleges in the country"  said Jesse Smith, dean of Jones County Junior College.

I can't believe he said that! Maybe he hasn't read the USNews ratings.

"My heart is still with the community colleges, because they're the ones who opened the doors when no others are there," Wheelan said. "We can address the needs of adult students all we want, but we can't afford to lose those younger students either. We're going to have to work together all across the educational system to make change."

What is this person saying?

He was misquoted. What he really said was "We know USM is one of the top colleges in the COUNTY."

Did anyone else notice the "Welcome SACS" message on the marquee in front of the PRCC Forrest County Center? Are they hosting their self-study visit, or was this in recognition of Dr. Wheelan's visit?

I find it a bit unusual that a visitor(for a site visit) is hosted for a meal --off campus-- but in my view it was also very unusual that no faculty groups were represented.

No doubt USM faculty did a great job in getting the accredation mess fixed, but if probatation is lifted as easily as indicated(SACS president included) by all interviewed I question the utility of SACS

I thought institutions under review, as is USM, were prohibited from wining, dining, or entertaining site visitors. I'm surprised that the SACS persident accepted a dining invitation involving an institution under review.

There is no such prohibition & it is in fact customary for the institution to entertain site visitors. In fact, the institution is expected to pay for meals, lodging & travel for peer evaluators. And it is also customary for the visitors to be "wined & dined" at off-campus locations. SACS staff members spend a considerable amount of time "on the road" & the association has always taken the position that institutions are responsible for bearing the cost of visits. The peer evaluators themselves are basically volunteers who receive virtually no payment & they would not be happy campers if they had to stay at Motel 6 & eat at McDonald's.

To suggest that the SACS executive director or any SACS peer evaluator could be "bribed" by a nice off-campus meal is basically saying that the entire higher education community is massively corrupt. Of course, folks who've spent their entire careers at USM might think that the entire higher education community is massively corrupt. I assure you that is not the case.

darliing,
how we take care of others in SACS is very well documented. our institutions pay their dues, pay for their self study process, pay for their consultants, come to our meetings with our high priced fees, and we all PRETEND that we are doing something that will improve the quality of institutions of higher learniing.

it has long been a "good ole boy" club. it now appears that the gals ( new comission on higher ed. president) appears to be right in line with all other SACS executives in ripping off the system. Just check out these guys and gals. Look and their salaries and annunities. The SACS organization, from elementary through the college commission, is stepped in a clmate of "we will take care of our own." This does not mean that they will not occassionally slap the hand of an institution, Auburn, USM, and others. We have to look legitimate.

If there was every an organization that need to be held accountable...it is SACS. Believe it. Believe it.

Invictus: Certainly the institution should provide funds for the site visitors' meals, lodging, and travel. Those funds would normally go to the accrediation body first, and not directly to the site visitors. To make a social event out of the visit by wining and dining the site visitors is not smart for reasons which should be obvious. An accrediting association that fails to build in proper controls by prohibiting socializing during the visit must have amateurs estalishing the rules.

I suppose you would have the University of Southern Mississippi "treat" the executive director of SACS to a McDonald's cheeseburger & a regular-size order of fries, right? Trust me, this is not "bribery" & having been on a SACS site visit myself, I'll guarantee that after working all day (and most of the night), the team really enjoys having an hour or two at a nice restaurant. BTW, it is typical during a site visit for there to be no institutional representatives present.

Taking it a step farther, Dr. Wheelan's visit was not a "site visit." It appears to have been a "courtesy visit." In case you haven't noticed, South Mississippi was recently affected by the largest natural disaster in the history of the U.S. There were representatives present from other institutions besides USM. And as I indicated up-thread, there was a marquee sign at PRCC, so the visit may not have been 100% USM-related. I see nothing unusual about the "wining & dining," nor do I see anything incorrect, improper, or "amateurish" under these circumstances. (The only "amateurs" involved were those from the USM administration.)

Methinks a few people here are pretty desperate for something to bitch about. If this is the best you can do, things must really be improving at USM. </SARCASM>

"Now, a very great man once said
That some people rob you with a fountain pen.
It didn't take too long to find out
Just what he was talkin' about.
A lot of people don't have much food on their table,
But they got a lot of forks n' knives,
And they gotta cut somethin'."

I was referring only to site visitors. I remain firm and confident in my position on that issue. Socializing with site visitors is not smart and is prohibited by many accrediting agencies. I was not bitching. This is an AAUP message board devoted to academic matters. The issue I raised is an academic matter and a legitimate topic for this board.

Accreditation site visitors can eat where, what, and when they want to eat. They usually prefer an upscale restaurant. They should not be accompanied by those whose program they are assessing.

I started this thing about off site entertainment....my intent was simply why not have a meal "on campus" , i.e. on site.   Charcoal Room, Commons, etc so these "visitors" can see and feel the campus rather than some insulated meal at a convention center.

I probably would have taken this much better if Shelby and Shirley threw another steak on the grill on Jamestown rather than having Angie roll out the red carpet.
