Sure there're lots of "ethical" and "moral" persons who've never darkened the door of a church and who are agnostic or atheistic. But I never viewed God like a cop on the highway checking for speeders. My parents and my elementary school principal maybe, but certainly not God.
O.K., but what about the "values" you referred to being in addition to ethics? Or did I misunderstand? Here is a question for you: Can an atheist have the same ethics (morals) and "values" as a theist?

You're way over my head now. Your question could best be addressed by a philosopher or maybe by somebody with a strong Jesuit education. I am in neither of those categories.

We seem to be in the same boat on that one. I wonder if any readers can help us here. Of course, if both can have the same ethics and values we are faced with the question of "what advantage is there to theism?".
(One advantage is you can get people to blow themselves up in public. Sorry, I just couldn't help myself. )

The supreme being I'm talking about is not so much one who punishes us for our transgressions (although there are consequences if we violate the His natural laws). He is one who forgives us for our transgressions (and all of us have and continue to commit many transgressions). His forgiveness is availale to those who are highly ethical/moral as well as to those who are highly unethical/immoral (in that sense we are all the same in His eyes).
I've enjoyed our brief interaction although this board is probably not the best place to discuss these matters. I've got to go now but I look forward to reading future contriutions you might make.

Thanks Speak. Same here. It has been an interesting rainy day.
Guys, this has gone on, and on, and on. . . . is there any possibility of giving it a rest, or exchanging email addresses (via Truth) and taking it private?
