I've talked and visited with alot of USM supporters since Hurricane Katrina. I'm speaking in a general way.Graduates and community people-not the local group that actively supports Thames. Most are aware of the Thames-faculty contoversy, but it isn't a big concern. I think the sentiment has switched from the faculty to Thames in a dramatic way since the storm. Some of this is natural. We've had a disaster and people tend to support their leader in a time of crisis. Plus Thames is seen regularly on TV with a positive message and the implicit endorsement of the student body. The faculty,by contrast, is seen only when they are complaining. Most people in a general way support the concept of merit pay although we all know the difficulties of implementing this in the real world. The faculty is viewed as a group unwilling to change. ----------I'm writing this post about perceptions, not reality. In most instances I feel Thames is now viewed by the general public as holding the high ground. I believe the faculty position is correct but is not seen as correct by most USM supporters.

These are interesting observations, because my impression has been that the general public NEVER understood the faculty's position and that the most vocal supporters in the public were pro-Thames. I have no recollection of a time when I felt that the public supported the faculty--even after the Glamser-Stringer debacle. This is one of the reasons I left Hattiesburg. Perhaps others still there have a different perception.

I agree with Foot Soldier.  I'd like to hear others impressions of the current climate.

On another note, perhaps if Thames wants the faculty's support, it is time for him to apologize to the faculty insteading of calling them sluggards and criminals in public.  I've always wondered how faculty were expected to educate Mississippi's young people when they were publically denegrated by their leader.

Read the thread "H.A. Editorial".  Thames is now acting more like a president that listens to input form faculty ("shared governance") as far as the paper see it.

Hate to say it, but out here in the so-called "real world" I don't hear much of anything about ST good or bad. He has moved down many rungs on the ladder of concerns, even, I must admit, my own. Just waiting for him to leave and in the meantime hoping the tarps hold.

The view from this window, blown out by Katrina, has revealed some different data.

The word on the street, via and non-scientific poll, is that a faculty vote of confidence on SFT would now top 7%. A second poll had him at 8.5%. What progress! If he reaches 10% it will be clear sailing on a contract extensiion.

A new pollster is planning a poll of students, alumni, and the general community. Results will be forthcoming. A faculty member that received a stealth raise is conducting all new polls for SFT.

I'll believe this when I get polled. Until then . . .

If you haven't figured out by now that faculty support isn't required, then you need to have your degrees rescinded. Thames is working on a contract extension, and smart money is on him getting it. How dejected many will be when the extension is announced.

Hey BDM,
Where have you been? Did you not here that SFT met with the FS? The communication problem is solved. He already has another meeting scheduled with FS...in 2008. Times are changing. The winds of Katrina have blown in a new climate of participation and involvement. The HA is back in SFT's corner. Ricky Mathews (Sun-Herald) never left, he is still having his string pulled by SFT. Progress is being made at a pace that can not be measured. SACS will not only remove us from probation but we will be a model for others. The governor is solidily behind our leader, so are our US Senators, and the powerbrokers are still there. WHAT ELSE CAN WE ASK FOR? COUNT YOUR BLESSINGS!
