On the heels of the recently published reports of Giannini's huge raise and those of other senior administrators in the Athletic Department comes a letter from the Athletic Foundation to Eagle Club donors, soliciting contributions to help offset revenue shortfalls and additional expenses incurred due to Hurricane Katrina.
According to the October 6 letter, the Athletic Department is facing up to a $1 million budget deficit for academic year 2005-2006.
The athletic department approved the expenses. And now they're running a deficit. Maybe the Athletic Director can start the fund-raiser by contributing, say, $40K of his own money.
(If I approved expenditures that ran my office $1 million in the red, figuring I'd just do a quick million dollar fund-raiser, I do believe I would be fired. And I'd feel relieved if that's all that happened. That's not how things work in the up-is-down scheme of things at USM. No, if I committed such a faux pas at USM, I'd get a flippin' $40K pay raise.)
Me thinks that crying red ink is a ploy to prepare for asking for a fema check. I am suprised the aaup or the FS or the campus crusade for beezelbub have not announced that they lost a million because of katrina. If one says they lost it, one will be paid.

Does this really surprise anyone? In 1998 they borrowed $1 million from the university that they have never repaid. When that administration tried to collect it in 2001, it caused us to lose that president. Athletics is soaking USM. Ricky Giannini needs to be sent packing if he can't do the job with a guy like Shelboo in office.
