I heard a story on WDAM last night about a golf tournament for USM faculty with the winner going to Las Vegas. The hypocrisy of the academic community is appalling. If no one plays golf ,how do they have a tournament? How do they take time off from such a strenuos work schedule to practice? Do the local firemen or policemen have a tournament?
"The truth about golf wrote" needs to get their "facts" straight. Each year the faculty golf champions of participating universities win a trip to Las Vegas to enter the national championship. Last year Dr. Dave Beckett, president of faculty senate, (and someone else I don't remember) represented USM and won the national title. I understand this is sponsored by depts. of sports administration at the various universities. I also believe the tournament is not conducted during the regular academic semester.
"The truth about golf" must have an ax to grind. And yes, local fireman and police play golf, bowl and engage is various other activities.
The only hypocrisy I see on this thread is by "The truth about golf wrote".
Gone, gone, gone wrote: This has turned into one of the most ridiculous threads I've ever seen on this board. Who cares who plays golf? Everyone needs some recreation--no matter what his/her profession.
Couldn't agree more.
This thread has gone on way too long--must be time for the Next Dumb Thing.
It's true.Whatever one thinks, the faculty loves the links.
What??? You mean that faculty don't work 24/7. How dare they take recreational breaks when this poor state is paying their salary. Don't they realize that "hired help" in this state has roots going back to the plantation days? "Good" faculty don't just work 8-5, 5 days a week. Roy Klumb was right, faculty must think they are like doctors, lawyers and the business people that do business on the golf course.
