Today's SP editorial is highly critical of USM faculty for enforcing attendance policies and assignment due dates at this time. I concur. Shame on you all.

The Student Printz is way off base here. I am as critical of the USM faculty as anyone, but remember even in trying times, we all still have responsibilities. I can't just not do my job because of the storm. We can not allow our students at USM to believe that because of this storm (Hattiesburg Campus) that they are no longer responsibile for going to class, doing their work and doing so in a timely manner.
The biggest problem that faces America today is that far too many American's feel that they should not be held responsible for anything, especially their own actions.
The Printz was once a great publication. The coverage of the Thames situation a couple of years ago was superb, but last year's work, especially in the areas of news and opinions were weak. From what I understand, there has been a power shift in the news room over there. Early last school year, a number of staffers began jumping ship to the Thames gang, which would explain the less than stellar reporting performance of the staff last year.
Printz staff beware--you have fallen into a dangerous trap. And faculty members should be on the lookout too. Don't expect any help from the once fair publication. It's being run by lackies who would rather attack our faculty members than help them make USm a better, more educational learning environment.

I think alot of this is a product of the academic culture. In the old days, university professors worked much harder and inspired respect for the work ethic.Today's students see the faculty more in the bars and on the golf courses than in the classroom. As a result they think, why should I work hard when the profs are operating on cruise control.

You have absolutely NO clue as to what most professors do. For most of our married life, my spouse has left for the office before 8 and come home after 6. Weekends are spent on research--sometimes at home--sometimes at the office. He doesn't teach in the summer, but he works all summer on his research projects. He has given up the salary he could make in the public domain in order to do what he loves.
I am SO SICK of this "golf course" garbage. It's gone on for months. I know a bunch of faculty and they all work very hard for substandard salaries in a miserable environment. I don't know a single one who plays golf. Isnt' it time to give this junk a rest??

Okay, now you've gone and done it...you've made LVN mad. Please lay off the golf course garbage already and restore some civility to this board!

Yeah, they're kinda like the love bugs--a real nuisance with nothin' better to do than screw around, and they'll die off in a few days.
And, I agree with the earlier post--I've never even heard a professor TALK about golf, much less actually go out and play it. So these trolls just get a kick out of setting brush fires in the hope that some of us will run around stamping them out.
I sincerely wanted to know if Maggie Williams is still the faculty advisor of the Student Printz. I was not implying anything negative about her. Quite the contrary. She is one of the heroes of USM. I was just concerned that the new tone of the Printz might mean that she was no longer there. There is no finer person in the world than Maggie. Please don't take my question the wrong way. She deserves ALL of our support. She has been on the front lines. I hope she is still there and doing well!!!
Who cares anymore wrote: USM is nothing now but a 4 year community college. There's hardly anything left that inspires. Class dismissed.
I resemble that remark about community colleges. Community colleges generally don't pretend to be anything but open admissions institutions with a heavy commitment to remediation. USM does.

I know several profs who play golf. Hell, they even talk about it openly. What's wrong with that? It's legal, it's healthy, it's therapeutic, and tens of millions of people all over the world have played the ancient game since the early 1400's. If exposing an academic as a recreational golfer is the worst thing they can come up with you know the faculty bashers must be running out of ammo.

There is a Faculty-Staff golf league that plays at Shadow Ridge Golf Club on Wednesday evenings in the fall and spring. Tee off time begins at 4:30 pm. Some faculty tee off early because they have duties in the evenings while staff tend to tee off later because they can't get off early.
I believe any public golf course in this area would tell you that they would be devastated if the USM faculty left. The professors comprise the majority of golfers during the weekdays.
I believe the faculty should just ignore these golf postings. Trying to deny that college professors play alot of golf is sort of like trying to deny that the sun rises in the East or that the rivers run to the sea..Some things are self evident.
It's legitimate for professors to be at the golf course. Here's the proof:
HPR 134. Beginning Golf. 1 hr. Theoretical concepts and laboratory experience in development of fundamental golf skill techniques and competitive strategies.
HPR 234. Intermediate Golf. 1 hr. Golf techniques, game strategies, etc., for the more experienced player.
HPR 340. Coaching Golf. 2 hrs. HPR majors or minors only. Prerequisite or Co-requisite: HPR 306. Theoretical and practical approach to golf instruction. Course planning and maintenance, rules and etiquette, and tournament administration.
I assume that "laboratory experience" means going to a golf course & playing a few rounds...

The Printz hasen't changed, you are just on the other side of the spin this time.

I heard a story on WDAM last night about a golf tournament for USM faculty with the winner going to Las Vegas. The hypocrisy of the academic community is appalling. If no one plays golf ,how do they have a tournament? How do they take time off from such a strenuos work schedule to practice? Do the local firemen or policemen have a tournament?
Say what you want, but the people at The Printz have let us all down. And if the faculty wants to play golf, why can't they? Hell, SFT goes duck hunting, deer hunting, or tenure hunting at least once a year. Why can't professors have their fun away from the office too?
Those who complain that faculty play golf or (gasp) even stop by some place for an alcoholic beverage must spend a lot of time themselves in these same locations. How come they are not at work? Being a university professor does not mean, one has to punch a time clock. Many work late into the night preparing for class, grading papers, working on research, and all the other things required by the profession. The trolls and SFT supporters have no way to document this. I remember when it was traditional for physicians to have Wednesdays off and it was a well known fact that many had reserved tee times at the golf courses. No one criticized them. So all of you trolls, back to work and mind your own business.

Is this true or just an unsubstantiated rumor? If true ,it cast alot of doubt on the priorities of the faculty. A trip to Las Vegas at the time of disaster?
This has turned into one of the most ridiculous threads I've ever seen on this board. Who cares who plays golf? Everyone needs some recreation--no matter what his/her profession. Every profession has slackards--from doctors to university administrators to business people. So what.
If the university is deemed ready to start up again, then students must be ready to strap on the class requirements. Some students need to be cut a little slack, and most professors will work with the individual student on a case by case basis. But I've been in this profession too long to know that others will try to ride the coat tails of the disaster in order to miss class, miss assignments. If the university is ready to start up, then bravo to everyone for doing their job--teaching.
