Some GC faculty looking for H'burg homes
Permalink Closed

A small number of GC faculty will choose to relocate to Hattiesburg temporarily this fall, an option offered at this morning's meeting in Long Beach.  If I am counseling a Coast faculty friend about the likelihood of finding temporary living quarters here, what should I say? Are rental units available and are they reasonably priced?  Will some Hattiesburg faculty be willing to open their homes to Coast faculty for a few months?

Actually, some coast people are already staying with Hattiesburg hosts, and some temporarily displaced locals have been staying with friends.

It's my understanding, from information furnished us after yesterday's COAL chair's meeting, that Denise von Herrmann has offered to serve as a go-between on housing offers, at least for COAL. (Since Denise appears to read this board, perhaps she could specify the parameters.) I've already mentioned that to a friend who would be willing to let someone stay there. Many people have a spare room or two, and stand to gain from the experience.

PS By "gain," I meant the non-tangible benefits of being human, not monetary gain. JL

As any other private citizen concerned for our colleagues at the Coast (and NOT in any "official" capacity for the college) it would be my privilege to help any and all if I can to make personal connections between those who have rooms or homes to offer and those who need the same.  Likewise those who can offer books, who can share office space with displaced Coast faculty, or who can provide any other help I've not thought of myself, I'm happy to facilitate communications.  I've previously posted home phone and email, but permit me to do so again, please:

Thanks, Denise. It looks as though private citizens are doing much of the recovery work.

Dear Realtor or anyone else interested:

I have a home on S. 14th that I can make available at a discount to anyone with a temporary agreement lease if they are a displaced hurricane victim and will take good care of my property while they are there.   This home is a larger 2 bedroom, 2 full bath that I renovated in 2003.  It also has another small room that would serve as an office off of one of the bedrooms.  I believe it is about 1300 square feet.  It has a dining room proper with a one car garage, all appliances included with a washer and dryer.  My current tenants are leaving it clean and ready to go this Tuesday the 13th.

I have rented this home for $700 but I would be happy to rent it to a displaced individual or faculty for $525 with a flexible term, just let me know what you might be needing and we can go from there.  As much as I would like to offer it up for free it's just not financially possible to do that, as my cost of ownership (mortage, taxes, insurance) are around $525 a month.  I hope this offer can help someone.

If interested please feel free to email me at emilyvardaman@yahoo.com

Best To All,

Emily Walters

I have had a taker on the before mentioned house, sorry I couldn't help each and every person who is currently displaced.

Best to you all,

Hi All,

I have another house available for rent.  Sorry to anyone who emailed me about the other one, I didn't keep contact info from you.  Hope this gets to you if you are still needing a place to live.  It's available Nov 1 for 525.00 a month. This home is a cute cottage on S 12th, it's a 2 bd/1bth with WD and dishwasher and nearly new fridge.  It's a cutie and storm tested, it had a roof repair but it's all good and water tight now.  Nice yard and cute lil'porch.  I am also putting out feelers to sell this home at 53K which is under market and a darn good value.  I have it listed on Craigslist under FSBO and have one inquiry so if you are looking to take the plunge or want a flexible/temp lease that might work out beautifully.  I can be reached at emilyvardaman@yahoo.com if you would like to discuss.

Best

Emily
