Having never gone through a hurricane, I can only imagine what it is like. Been through more than one tornado in my lifetime and figure its got to be a lot like that only with more water, and notice.
The only thing sobering about this piece was Mr. Barthelme's lack of concern for other human beings. He's on a "camping trip"? Good for him. Let him stay gone.
I know some people in Hattiesburg who aren't on a camping trip. They're trying to figure out how to put their lives back together, and they dont have a "dark history" with the casinos to crow about in order to try to sell some more merch.
Those downed trees don't look so beautiful when they're jammed through your roof. And I guess you do get to be pretty neighborly when you're siphoning gas from a lawnmower to make your car engine run so you can go get some water.
He's a typical college prof.Very glib, but lacking in any moral fiber. He needs a little time out in the hot sun helping the victims of this disaster. My recollection from his "New Yorker" piece is that he rolls out of bed around noon each day after an all nighter at the casinos. He must be greatly inconvenienced by the storm
You have absolutely NO idea how many professors--liberal arts, arts, science, education, every discipline--are helping in this disaster--all the way from Hattiesburg to Birmingham to Mobile to the middle of Texas. Your prejudices are showing, Survivor and Talonical.
