The Goertzens' eldest daughter reports that her parents evacuated first to Hattiesburg and then to Jonesboro, Arkansas, to stay with family. They don't yet know what happened to their home in Slidell but do know that there wasn't any flooding a few blocks away from it.
I thought it would be helpful to start a thread for those who are looking for people and/or reporting that they (or others) are safe. This way we'd have it all on one thread.
Tonight I was able to make contact with Frank Glamser who rode out the hurricane at his residence in Oak Grove. Although there was considerable property damage in his neighborhood, I am happy to report that he and his wife are at home and safe.
Checking in...I have missed everyone. There is much to tell later but right now I am enjoying being with my family away from all of the horror that the hurricane dumped on us. So glad to hear that everone who has posted is safe. Here's to better times.

Glad to know you're safe, DS -- and that so many others are, too.
I received word that Invictus weathered the storm unharmed and I'd like to take this opportunity to pass that information on to you. I understand that there was damage to his house, but I do not have a full acount of the extent.

Posting via satellite uplink (would you expect any less?)...
Invictus family is OK. We lost all but one tree in our (small) yard & that one may need to be taken out due to the damage it sustained. Of those that fell, one grazed the front of the house & gave us a skylight inside the front door. Fortunately, we got plastic sheeting & buckets deployed & had only sheetrock damage to the interior.
My neighborhood has been terrific since the storm with everyone pitching in & block cookouts as freezers meltdown. I wish everyone had that kind of place to live.
In the rural areas, there are poor people who are seriously hurting -- no food, no water, no communication & no money. I hope all the emphasis on the immediate urban coast & NOLA doesn't make the public forget that there are needy people who are literally 10 miles up dirt roads in the boonies.
So... I'm terribly sorry, Shelby, but I'm still here!

Boudreaux,
We haven't heard anything yet from Hermione Angleterre or Monique de Guerre. I rather expect we'll know something as soon as they get their power back. I can almost imagine that MdG will have something rather self-deprecating to say about being able to do nothing, when she probably donated all the gas from her sports car to run a neighbor's generator. And Hermione will have found a way to make English tea, even in the heat.
I have been in contact with Edith Adan-Bante. She is fine. Her apartment was relatively undamaged. She has indicated that the rest of the math faculty (John Harris, Nell Bishop, and Julie Cwikla) are also fine, but no word about their housing situations.
Whew! Let's not do this again anytime soon, ok? I done did Camille (total loss, no terror) and now this 'un (total terror, less loss.) Anyway, cats and I are fine, ensconced at my mom's where there is power and phone. I broke down and got a dial up account, but will not be able to use it very often so as to keep the phone line open. Have gone back to work. My house is in the University Heights area, most of which took a major hit. Tornado? Anyway, I have a couple of new skylights now, and it will be weeks before phone, power and cable are restored, but I count myself blessed. Right after the storm I saw Joe & Theresa Parker, who had damage, but were personally ok, and they had sheltered a lot of folks from Louisiana. Also saw Jameela, who is now operating the Displaced English Faculty Hotel and Home for Cats.
Glad to hear good reports from so many friends. Thanks to all of you for your good wishes and prayers.
Happy to hear from Invictus!!! Still hoping to hear from Let Freedom Ring sometime. Also, does anyone know about Stephen Judd?
Hey Foot Soldier, Hey Old Friends!
Sorry to take so long in responding - no power for AGES! We are all fine (well, not the yard and there is that small tree on the roof but compared to others we are great) - thank you for checking. It was wild with no power, no gas, no phone, no newspapers, no TV, no routine ...... very disorienting.....as was the landscape. At any rate, things are getting significantly better by the day. Thank you for asking and it is good to see that so many others are also okay - just one more reason I value this board so much! No Quarter!
