Please if anyone has any information on South 21st Ave area please let us know. We have evacuated and we are OK, but we have family who has a house on that street that we would love to get infor on their house. Specifically the 600 block area of S21st ave. We are unable to get a call through to anyone in Hattiesburg since last night. Thank you so much for the info. If you ahve general info or live close by we can then give you a specific to look at.
We, too, evacuated and are having a hard time getting back to town because of all the road closures. But if you check MDOT's website, you can see which roads are open now -- note that US49 is for emergency vehicles only.
We live on the 700 block of S. 18th, and have been able to talk to our neighbors across the street (Sam & Beth Bruton). Every house on our street has at least one tree down, and most of the trees have fallen on houses. The power is completely out as well. They say, from what they can see, that the rest of the area seems the same -- apparently the entire landscape has changed. . .Beth said you can see houses that you could never see before.
We are coming back with extra visquine (sp?) & nails to share with neighbors as we assume Lowe's will be out of everything needed for clean-up. If you need some, come on by.
Thanks for the information. My family has lived in that house for a long time. In fact two weeks after I moved in Camille hit -- glad that I was out of town for this one. We are also going to try to make it back as soon as the roads open and will be loaded with construction supplies and essentials in case family and friends cannot find them there. My mother's yard has (had) twenty or so trees in the yard and the odds of a hit seem high. Jill and I live in the historic district and all of our trees came down -- but none hit our house thankfully. Clean up and patching holes in the roof will take a while, though. If you get there first let me know and I will give you my mother's exact address.
Send me an email at poohandpoet@earthlink.net (my parents' email), and we can share contact info.

I just got back in town and stopped at campus. Jane and Hannah were stuck in the storm without me. I was up in PA picking up Jane's dad who has Alzheimer's. I had to stop in Birmingham last night while it blew through Tuscaloosa and Meridian. 59 South is a mess and 59 North was impassable due to downed trees. Hattiesburg looks like a war zone. The front window in OMH is blown out, as is a major second floor library window. I have a generator and satellite web connection at home, so I can check non USM e-mail. The students on campus look worn out and many look like PTSD is about to set in. We have no electricty or phone or cell phone. Cell phones stopped working, and I think that the bandwidth may have been taken over by emergency services. I am worried that my 13 year old is a bit in shell shock. If you can stay where you are and it is safe, stay there. Best to ST and MT.

Thanks for the update, Mitch. Glad to know you all are safe, too. I was worried about you all down in the country. I hope TG came into town. Thanks, too, for the update about campus. If you think about it, re-post your campus update info on the Hattiesburg/USM update threads so others will see the info as well.
I sent an email out to all my grad. students, and have heard from 3 of them who left town and don't use usm email. They are all safe. One student reported on the status of about 6 more, and they are all OK as well. I was really impressed at orientation the other day by how many grad students across the programs were from such geographically diverse locales. What a welcome to the Costal South!
Mitch, I am stranded in Birmingham and was not able to get out today. How did U get back to Hattiesburg? The only way I saw was I20 to Jackson, then over to Utica and back down Crystal Springs.
I'd appeciate any info U have. I have called MDOT and all emergency management people all day to no avail.
Does anyone have any infomation about the Burnt Bridge area of Oak Grove and the Lamar Ave. area?

I took 59 South. It may be a bit better today. Gasoline is scarce, so make sure you fill up in Meridian if you can find a station pumping. I heard a couple of stations in HBG had gas today, but the lines are long. Purvis, I am told, will not have electricty for about four weeks. I am 8 miles South of Purvis and the best I can do is hope for access to gas for my generator until maybe early October. Half the shingles on my roof are gone, so the next task is to figure out where I can get some roof tarps.
