Do we know anything about fall enrollment at USM yet? Has enrollment been effected by the ongoing Thames soap opera?
MSU's enrollment is a mixed bag. Up in freshmen (+15%), down in cc transfers (-4%), up in returning students (+3%), down in new grad students (-5%). Total unduplicated enrollment is +3% (16030 students) as of today. These numbers are subject to change until the 10th day of classes.
Based on Preview, enrollment of incoming freshmen will probably be down on the Hattiesburg campus, but because of the Coast, overall enrollment will probably be up. I will reserve interpretation for my learned colleagues.

Dear Friends of USM,
I'm happy to report that USM at D'Lo enrollment is up 100% over Fall 2004. Some nattering nabobs of negativism might point out that we weren't open for business in 2004, but I'm not one to dwell on the negative. We have a fine group of incoming freshmen, a promising football team, and a small but world class bunch of graduate students. We couldn't be more pleased.
Miss Emma and LVN have already made great strides in attracting pledges for our million dollar capital campaign and with any luck, we'll be breaking ground on our new medical and law schools by early 2006.
Please stop by and see us whenever you find yourself revisiting Highway 49. The door is always open, and coffee from our new campus Starbucks is always on me.
Yours truly,
W.J. Johnson, Professor of Economic Development and Chancellor, USM at D'Lo

Dear Professor Johnson,
It is always a pleasure to read your posts; they are always so inspiring and uplifting. In fact, I am feeling so inspired and uplifted by this most recent post that I would like to pledge a million dollars myself. Oh, what the heck -- let's make it forty million so you have can a larger endowment than the Hattiesburg campus.
Spiro Agnew ... Wasn't he the one who referred to college professors as "pusillanimous pussyfooters" ?
No. "Pusillanimous pussyfooters" was coined by Pat Buchanan, one of Agnew's speechwriters. Agnew did deliver the line, but to describe journalists hostile to the Nixon administration, not college professors. "Nattering nabobs of negativism" was also aimed at journalists, and came from the pen of William Safire, Agnew's other speechwriter.
How naive are you academics? You know that it is our policy, over here in enrollment management, to never be first in revealing enrollment. We let all of the other institutiions get their numbers out first....and then.....we can "cook our books" with our Shelbycounter System. We already know that MSU has reported a "mixed bag" and we are waiting on others before we use the Shelbycounter. With the program out at Oak Grove we will have no problem in going over the top.
You would be surprised to see what you, yourself may be enrolled in. You do know it won't cost you anything. Faculty and staff do get tutition assistance as a fringe benefit. You do not have to attend classes....it is all independent study.
As you know, USM is an institution that practices participatory decision making. We in enrollment management, have been instructed by the president, to solicit ideas from faculty members and staff regarding ways we can make our numbers the highest in the state. Please post your suggestions on this board or break away from your preparation for classes and visit us in person. You do get MIDAS points for this activity and you can put this on your faculty activity report.
We look forward to making our final report. I sure that SACS will be impressed with our numbers.

I can only think of one suggestion to increase enrollment, faculty and staff numbers. Replace SFT.

We always have the Shelbyclones in the lab...they can carry an FTE or two at each campus if we put 'em on the shuttle and drive 'em around! Jackson County here we come! Science Fiction Double Feature! GGP
