Bower dismisses/suspends key players
Permalink Closed

6 key players will be missing for USM's season opener.  Two (Pedi Causey and All-American John Eubanks) were just suspended for violating team rules.  Two others (including Michael Boley's brother) were permanently dismissed from the team.  The final two have left the squad on their own accord.  Included among the 4 that are gone for good is Naton Stewart.

USM's athletics department, save the baseball program, is approaching shambles.  The cozy little relationship between Thames, Mr. G and the car dealers in coming home to roost.

Next, we welcome Marcus Raines to the 'burg.

Cock-a-doodle-doo!

2 of the ones that are now gone are Anthony Harris, a long-time producer at RB and Darrell Bennett, a starting DB.  Not good.

The stories get wierder.  Lee-McNelis just hired Lance Pittman as an administrative assistant.  Wow.

Only one of those players are really key to the season, that being John Eubanks who will miss one game.  Pedi Causey has played very little.  Boley's brother has not played at all, Naton Stewart was a part-time starter with a terrible attitude, and I suspect Anthony Harris is really just mad because he was moved from tailback to fullback in the spring.

I hate to see this happen but Bower runs a tight ship and players are expected to follow the rules.  The team will be better off in the long run.

Is Mack Grubbs the local name for Gary Grubbs, the actor. Gary Grubbs has been chummy with Giannini since he moved to the Hattiesburg area 4 or 5 years ago.
He was the mouthpiece to put some pressure on the marching band when it wasn't doing what Giannini thought it should.

However, he was NOT part of the "car dealer group" that resulted in the ouster of Horace Fleming.  Despite coming from Bogalusa, Louisiana, Mack Grubbs has been an influential member of the USM Alumni Association, and I believe is a member of the USM Hall of Fame.

Coach Bower made a decision that shows strong character and leadership.  There may be cracks in the foundation but Bower is not one of them.  Something like this would have been handled completely differently at some other schools with less scrupulous coaches.  Give him credit for sticking to his guns.

That's for sure.  See the following excerpt from today's Clarion-Ledger.  Note that Coach Croom said that no punishment will be given to these players.

MSU football

Defensive end Titus Brown pleaded guilty in Columbus Municipal Court to a charge of disorderly conduct for his role in the July 8 brawl at Big Kahuna's Beach Club. Brown paid a $350 fine, the same as teammates Michael Heard and De'Mon Glanton when they pleaded guilty on July 20.

The three were charged in two separate incidents that began when Columbus resident Elency Erby threw punches at a group of MSU football players at the bar

By the argument given for allowing Raines to be on scholly, it's OK to do something as long as it's not against team rules or the law and/or as long as you're not under the "jurisdiction" of team rules.

So, as long as Croom doesn't have a rule against going to "Big Kahuna's Beach Club," they didn't break any team rules and this is comparing apples to oranges. Elency Erby started a fight that the players finished. The players defended themselves. In the USM case, Bower had a rule about going to that bar and the players broke it. Two different things.

DT, you are right.  Not quite cracked is the biggest homer on this board.

I believe that Croom said to the media that if his players were defending themselves, so be it.  It's funny that Not quite cracked used this incident to make his point, when Croom has as much character in his little toe as Bower does in his lower body.

Not quite cracked posts on the sports threads under various names.  Is the biggest USM homer ever seen here.
