B&N Contract

I learned this week, news to me anyway, that B&N has a 10 year contract with USM.  Apparently, the standard contract for this sort of business is 5 years.  This gives the school a chance to pull the plug if things aren't working out.  This situation is occurring this year at a large Southern "public".  Doesn't look like USM will have that option for quite some time.

What is B&N? It sounds like a railroad to me.

before the next semester, check out the prices for texts at b&n.  Some titles are carrying prices above the publishers suggested retail.  never seen this before.  this is usual for dumb retailers that figure they can make up for lower than expected sales by jacking up prices.  the higher prices lower sales further .... you get the picture.  b&n must be taking lessons from aramark.

I think I liked it better during the time when there were about only 3-4 check out lines and students had to wait 5-15 minutes standing in long lines looking around aimlessly. This semester it seemed as if I paid full price new for a used book; it was $75 when it should have been maybe $55. I looked it up on B&N online and the original was $62. I wish I could boycott BN like aramark, but books are necessary.

Several were coming on this board last year and saying that B&N was charging inflated prices for texts, but no one would listen.  Everyone was too busy singing their praises and saying they charged MSRP just like other places.

Meanwhile, I saw prices for textbooks in my own classes at well above prices at Campus Book Mart across the street from campus.  CBM routinely prices books lower than B&N.  I suggest you send your book orders there instead.

Not a problem.  Just go to amazon.com.  The books are cheaper than bn.com.

Happy hunting.
