Do I have any actions in mind for TM? You bet! How about starting with an immediate search for a SFT replacement and a "coming home" session with the administration here now to set in motion the creation of a new vision (NOT just economic development and outside funding) to guide USM toward becoming a respectable institution of higher learning.

it will take an institutional meltdown to get IHL to act. They think they already have. Worst case scenario is an implosion in Spring '07. That would do wonders for the candidate pool. The IT audit planned 4 to 6 months from now is an indication that IHL really doesn't understand what they are dealing with. I understand their problem as I've never been able to fully keep up with the depth of administrative incompetence. It's simply breathtaking in a perverse way. This mess may become far and wide famous as a negative case study in academic misadministration. Sort of like Enron and its nonboard of directors.
We'll see if the new chief moves any faster but I doubt it. He can't afford to get fired twice.
What is the latest on the Coast Associate Provost? Any news to report?
As we enter Week 6 of Provost Watch, there is still nothing concrete to report. I would assume that in the event of an appointment a general announcement on USM Info would be immediately forthcoming. As soon as it is, Provost Watch will post to this thread. On the other hand a regular announcement may NOT be forthcoming, given the Dome's method of (not) notifying the ex-Deans that they were kaput by telling WDAM and the H'burg American first.
In related news, SFT was sighted on the Coast campus last Thursday, as was DVH from the CoAL. Also sighted was Coast Crim-Justice prof Tom Paine, very formally dressed. All these could be nothing more than a coincidence, of course. But they could mean that the powers that be were interviewing Dr. Paine for the interim associate provost job. A recess appointment maybe? Paine is a possibility. He's tenured, kept a low profile in the late troubles and is a member of the GOP establishment. He IS, however, the current Gulfport municipal judge, I believe and has for several years "bought out" a good portion of his time with a grant from some sort of law enforcement foundation or agency. Any speculation about Dr. Paine and the provostship is just that, however, speculation. As is usual, the Dome is keeping its cards close to its breast.
I've heard two people mention a former Gulf Coast school superintendent who teaches classes part time on the GP campus as a possible interim associate provost. Word is, she is smart, is from a "good family" etc. But how would faculty at Long Beach feel about a public school administrator as their interim AP?
