Secretary of state in running for higher ed commissioner

Secretary of State Eric Clark is among the leading prospects seeking to become Mississippi’s higher education commissioner, state College Board members confirmed today.
...

...Clark, a Democrat, spent 16 years in the Legislature. A former college professor with a doctorate from Mississippi State University, Clark was first elected secretary of state in 1995....

...Sen. Terry Burton, R-Newton, also has heard Clark’s name was on the “short list” of candidates....

His tenure in positions in the higher ed leadership should automatically disqualify him.

I'm not sure, but isn't sec. Clark a history major from USM? Anyone have knowledge about him.

As a coast resident, I have appreciated Clark's emphasis on balancing casino development with protection of the coastline. I think highly of him for that

Don't know him and will invest some time in learning.  However, having individuals serving on the IHLwith experience in higher education certainly seem like a plus.

I'm glad to see that Tom Meridith is a candidate.  He has the better credentials.

Sorry, too early and not thinking.  Had board position in mind, not Commissioner job.  My comment was uninformed and irrelevant.

I would hope that the new commissioner will be someone actively working in higher education and up to date on the issues facing universities across the nation and Mississippi universities in particular. A politician is the last thing Mississippi needs unless that person has strong academic credentials to support their candidacy. A Mississippi State doctorate and a stint at MC as a faculty member would not make one a strong candidate for a faculty position at most schools. The credentials of both Crofts and Potter appear to dwarf Clark's. It looks like Mississippi just can't break free of its old ways.

Exactly.

Is Shelby on the short list-he should be.  He's got some great experience and is pro-USM.

Experience is not enough. One must profit from that experience (no pun intended).

Amen! The very fact that Clark has expressed his desire to hold the post almost makes a parody of the things IHL has been saying for the past six months or so. If he is given any semblance of serious consideration for the job by even a minor faction of board members, it should be filed away under "further proof of the conspiracy theory."
