Folks, trust me on this one -- it happened. She was never contacted until someone told her that there was no contract in her box in late July 2002, although everyone else in her dept. had received one in their boxes. When she tried to call all named in the lawsuit - there was no response except for Martray who told her to contact Thames. Thames's first contact with her was almost 2 weeks after the semester started. She was advised by her attorney to not teach classes without a contract of some sort. They tried to use that as cause - didn't work. Then Thames sent her a letter after 2 weeks after classes started, wanting to meet with her and discuss things. Chaze immediately fired back a certified letter saying Anytime, Anywhere, Anyplace or whatever then on Aug. 30 she was told she was terminated. A single mother with 2 school age children, she went on MS unemployment, got food stamps, and joined the bereft until she landed another job. Don't beleive MOI? See you in court when it happens. This one is a stunner.

What I've never been able to figure out is why Carl went along with all this. Carl is generally viewed as a stand up guy, . What is your take?
My take on Carl? Well, I think he was compromised in the position - he held MW in high esteem (part of the overall debacle), and I don't think his 2 sentence denial of Tenure and Promotion for her reflected what he truly believed. I know of at least 20 other people who agree. But, at that point, he was stuck in the middle with no clue about what was going to befall him just 15 months later than his Nov. 1, 2001 "decision". There is other unsavory talk about his relationship with DT that I hope is not true - but many sources confirm that this too would be a good part of the ala Grisham novel.
This is one unbelievable story! And, it isn't going away.

Both MMS and MW were colorful and good academics. If Carl believed in MW's T&P, then doing what he did is disappointing for me. This event was the beginning to midway point of the downward slope of CISE (both a cause and effect). I sometimes wonder if any outcomes (including the G&S debacle and the firing of the deans) would have been different if Carl followed the recommendation of the T&P committee and also challenged SFT early in the game on a variety of other issues. I know that hindsight is 20/20, and being a dean is among the toughest jobs on a university campus, but one wonders. I really, really doubt that Carl had any unsavory relationship with anyone on campus (it's not his style). I think he just played the hand dealt to him as best as he could, and just folded too early. It would make a good fiction story, however. About a year ago, I assigned AH the task of reading "Straight Man," by Russo. This is a must read for all academics (as well as Exit 13 and the Compleat Academic).

No one quite like the Divine Miss MW. My money is on her and Chaze over those fatcats sitting on their hindquarters trying to figure out how to empower themselves any more than they've already tried by disaster. I think that as long as this remains a Topic of Interest - the viewers of this board are in for some eye-opening revelations that are as true as the law allows. Fact: MW was on MS unemployment for 13 or so months becauseThames was just a little too heady with power (pre- firing of the Deans and the G/S mess) to realize how illegally out of line he was back in those summer days in 2002. This actual court case will be a huge shock to his system. Gore normally likes to sneer that "we'll appeal", well - Gore has no bearing in any of it because Thames took his power out from under him at the get-go. Let them appeal, no one in the Whiting camp is too concerned. She stays in contact with many, many people including about a hundred or so former students via a listserve. Let the games continue.
He had already screwed Don Cotten at that point, many were bailing. To stick it to MW in the way that he did screams nepotism -- does he not realize the ramifications of his actions. I truly believe that this one is a best seller.
I guess I'm of the old school.I feel individuals have too many "rights" nowdays. I liked it better in the old days when people could be fired with no reason needed. We had alot less need for lawyers then and college teachers worked alot harder.

Aah, pining for the days of dictatorships, heh? The "old school" in Mississippi is well known for its anti-democratic and fascistic ways, but we have become part of the United States now.
