No, and I would like to hear the story on that one. That's awful.

Most likely, I shouldn't have brought this up. Telling more would essentially require "naming names" and I'm in no position to do that. But I do believe the story is true, and I will say that the dean under pressure did not bend to it.

Understood. Save it for "Afterward" -- when all the stories can be told.

Same old, same old from the local news distillery.  They publish one anti-SFT followed up with a lag by and pro-SFT piece.  Repeat the cycle.  This prevents angering any readers on either side preventing subscription cancellations.  Throw each side a bone every once in a while.  As a side benefit it pumps newstand sales.  Unfortunately, they have an interest in seeing this mess last as long as possible.

So much for high-minded journalistic ethics.

We call the phenomenon you describe "Mugwump Journalism." That means that the editor has his Mug on one side of the fence and his Wump on the other.

There a way that MIDAS could detrimental to USM's graduate programs. In Lieu of funding graduate students on research assistantships, or even building equipment into the budget, the PI could ask the funding agency for a 25% per semester released time. That should be obvious to anybody who has been successful in obtaining research support. Contracts are more amenable to this than are research grants. Contracts or research grants from private sources (e.g., industry) are more amenable to this than are federal contracts and grants (the feds are smart. Very smart. They wouldn't tolerate it).

How careful has the Thames administration been, sorting out grants and contracts that allow bonuses for release time from those that don't?

For instance, was any of this year's MIDAS recipients on an NSF grant?

All the more reason to get that list of recipients and their grants or contracts.

Excellent question. Did the MIDASSES generate those funds from a contract with the Olde Magnolia Tung Oil Products and Services, Inc., or from an NSF grant? It should be a matter of pubic record somewhere. That information should be made available in order to assist the rest of the faculty in deciding what route might be most effective.

Thank you for the definition.  Now, either one of 2 things is true.  Either the esteemed editor of the HA can't really tell mug from wump or this person should win the cynic of the year award.  I hope it is the former as being stupid is more honorable than being ethically challenged.  Whoops, I assumed integrity is a variable in the mix, silly me.

Get ready for some more of this type of stuff.  SFT will try to prolong the agony by blaming the faculty for the decline of the institution, i.e. failure to get by SACS either this fall and/or next spring.  Further, like any miserable, failing leader he'll probably try to take down as many people with him as possible.  Either a SACS debacle or enrollment problems in the fall are tailor made for blaming faculty.

Ya'll be careful out there.
