Having read the postings on other threads and the article in today Hattiesburg American, can others help in identifying ALL the costs SFT and company have cost Mississippi tax payers in "running a wurl class" university? A good starting point is the $400K+ listed in the article. Feel free to add up the costs.
I'll begin. I don't know how much USM had to pay for instructors to pick up the courses Gary and Frank were teaching when they were banned from their classes, but those costs should be included.
Cost "savings" from the infamous Reorganization, reported to be $1.8 million, spent twice adjusted for the Gunther Report...about $2.5 million?
Maybe that's just being facetious, so how about this:
In addition to the much-discussed and legitimate loss of institutional memory, there is the real financial cost of turning over 11 deans, a couple provosts, several VPs, and hundreds of faculty and staff in just three years. Turnover is expensive in any organization; turnover costs have beein astronomical under Shelby Thames.
How much does it cost to correct the mistakes of reorganization? You know, like the reorganization of the reorganization? The elimination of positions and then the scramble to filll them when it's discovered that the positions were necessary after all? This reminds me, why has there been no discussion of the "newly created" associate provost position on the coast? Someone just figured out we need an academic there after all?
Another cost that has not been mentioned in this thread is the large turnover in department chairs/directors. Although it is difficult to quantify because of the mergers of some depts, I would say between 1/3 and 1/2 of chairs/directors have turned over in the last few years.
Another cost that needs to be factored in is that of defraying the cost of recruiting replacement faculty for the many who have left. On the other hand, maybe the Hattiesburg bidness community will provide those recruiting expenses at no cost to the taxpayer.
defraying the cost of recruiting replacement faculty for the many who have left.
Recruiting costs shouldn't cost much. Instead transporation by air at standard fares and dining at the Purple Parrot, let them take Greyhound and dine at Krystal. See us for our USM special.
Speaking of recruiting, during the past 13 hours there have been two more additions to the 2004-2005 stickythread at the top of the message board. I sometimes forget to examine those threads for new postings . . . . .
