Sounds like a spin on Groucho Marx's great line (from "Cocoanuts", I believe): "I would never join a club that would have me as a member"
you are right, think before you type. there is no reason to advertise nationally for a opening that is to filled within the department. if I submitted an application for such a position, only to learn the successful candidate was to be hired from within the department, I'd be *****.

I've though about it and you're correct. There's no reason to advertise any position, because we have world-class administrators waiting in the wings. I'm sure the hire that was made is the best person for the job and would prevail even in a national search.
More of the same from the CoB. Recycled old cronies coming back to roost. This will be really good for those who have always benefited from who they know, not what they do.

My but you do sound bitter. Sounds like you've been at USM too long. Understandable. Made me bitter too.
So there was only one applicant for the chair's job? Greene Hall was shocked when they found out the old chair was "stepping" down and position had already been filled. Not even an internal search except behind most faculty's backs.

Cynical to bitter to eventually angry (see Citizen Gone). A natural progression with most still just cynical but in a semester or so more bitter. The real anger may come during the next prez search. God help the next set of administrators with an angry faculty that isn't afraid. And the locals really ought to leave this bunch alone.
