I can't imagine that the COEP administration would want to remain in their current positions under such depolorable conditions if the rumors you site are confirmed. I've seen very good people resign from their administrative positions for much less reason that that.

Pete--Didn't your chair Stan Kuczaj write a letter in support of SFT last year? Just a question.
He did. It was posted to the old board I believe. He spoke of how conducive to productivity the environment at USM is, and that he would recommend employment here to young scholars from anywhere.
I believe the date was February 9, 2004--before Thames tried to fire G and S.
That was just seventeen months ago. I wasn't aware that the academic environment had deteriorated that much in just seventeen months. Were things really that good in Feb. '04?
Yeah, our chair, Stan Kuczaj wrote such a letter. I didn't agree with everything in it at the time, but I can understand that a chair sometimes has a different perspective than faculty might have with regard to "talking things up".........in reality, we do recruit very strong young researchers and faculty in our department. We also, sometimes lose good, young researchers and faculty because of some of the idiocy that has been going on. However, we have several new, young, enthusiastic folks entering for the coming year. I think they have a good shot at making quite a name for themselves in their areas of research.....just like Ted Christ managed to do over 3 years....then landed a job at the highly prestigous Univ. of Minnesota.
Stan is very supportive of new faculty with regard to reduced teaching loads, etc. I think sometimes he has to pick and choose his battles.....and in the case of the letter referred to in this post, it was one of those that he apparently felt wasn't a battle to fight in terms of sending out a letter that some of us might feel was a little too "rah rah"
