A big congratulations are in order for USM baseball player Brad Wilcutt. Brad was just recently drafted in professional baseball, after setting numerous records at Southern Miss. Way to go Brad.
Just a fews now until USM grid stars report back to campus. This year's slate features an interesting road trip to North Carolina State. Look for the Eagles to contend for the new C-USA championship again this year.

Mayor Dupree has won reelection. Now it is time for the city to provide USM with the funds it needs to move athletics to the next level. Much of the money needed for certain improvements was won from the legislature last year by President Thames. The city council and the mayor should generate funds for something new, like a large indoor practice facility for the football team, as a good faith move. After all, the university generates $310 million a year for the local economy. That's the C-P R take.
Good Grief CP! The city needs to build USM a nice athletic facility as a measure of good faith? How many cities do that? Also maybe USM should have backed the city part of the bond issue -- then it would have passed. I have many friends in the city who are not tied to USM in any way. They did not vote for the issue because they saw pay for no benefit - no matter what part of USM got that benefit. For a bond issue to pass (remember this one was beaten badly) people need to see a benefit for the potential cost. In the last one there was none. It is USM that should have gotten this right.

If USM doesn't step up soon in a big way I think it should be open bidding for USM games. Let Jackson or the Coast come up with a facility and watch USM move its home games away from Hattiesburg. Whoever comes up with the most money gets the revenue from the football games -- if Hattiesburg doesn't want those extra dollars in its coffers, then maybe Biloxi or Jackson will. Jackson already has a stadium and plenty of USM grads live there. Maybe after they loose out on some of that revenue, these sorry restaurant owners will wake up and see what their missing.
Sorry, but putting out a hand for city tax dollars continues to make absolutely no sense.
USM is a state university, not a city university. I'd be very curious to know how many state universities (besides Ole Miss) have ever tapped into city or county tax funds to pay for their athletic facilities.
I don't think its a hand out. I believe Hattiesburg owes USM big-time. Without USM, Hattiesburg would still be just a wide spot in the road. USM was good in sports long before the ivory tower professors took over USM. Sports will take the lead again soon. I think Robert Campbell is right. There ought to be an income tax to support USM. 1% of your income to support the college that puts food in your kids mouths. Dr. Thames could use that money any way he saw fit specially if its for sports which is all anybody in Hattiesburg cares about anyway.
