The Problem with "My enemy's enemy...."

It has been stated many times on this board that "My enemy's enemy is my friend."

The problem with that line of thought is that you will eventually end up in another bad situation.

Case in point: In WWII, the US and Britain took an unlikely ally -- the USSR -- because the USSR was against the Nazis. Well, the Nazis were eventually defeated, but the US and Britain spent the next 40 years in the Cold War with the USSR. I'm not equating the Cold War to WWII here, just pointing out that after WWII everything wasn't even close to rosey.

The point is that the faculty at USM had better be careful of who they take as an ally. Whether it is an IHL Board member (or members), the IHL commissioner, a politician, a newspaper editor, or whomever, those people will not necessarily be on your side when this is all said and done.

Herstory, you make an important point. People can rally around one event or one issue, but that doesn't make them allies or friends for life. I think the next months at USM are going to be hard as people tiptoe through this minefield of shifting alliances and allegiences. The anti-SFT insurgency has brought together many people who wouldn't like each other or agree with each other under normal circumstances. After the jubilation which will accompany ST's departure, whenever it comes, we must steel ourselves to turn to our beloved comrade-in-arms and realize that we now have nothing in common with this person and actually don't like them very much. It will be painful, but we have to think of it as a good pain, because it will mean a return to normal back-stabbing, infighting, name-calling business as usual. What a relief. And there will be some wonderful friendships that will last, and will strengthen the university.

But until then, heads up.
