C-P Report

Cox-Purvis is Brand New
Permalink Closed

The Cox-Purvis Report, or the C-P Report as we like to call it, is under new managment.  I was able to spend some time on the board last nite getting the lay of the land.  I even posted a few times.  I am happy to be here and I hope we can offer a good product.  I hope to introduce some new features to the report, like The Editorial, which we will introduce tonite.  We are all USM students (one is actually at Jones now, but will be here in the fall), with no ties to Ole Miss or State or any other school around here that is not black and gold.

First off, the new Powerhouse Restauarant is coming along now.  VP Lassen informed a student group the other day that all of the menu items will be named after important people and traditions in Southern Miss history.  The C-P Report is hoping to submit some entries, so let us have your best ideas for sports related items.  This is a great idea, and we want to see it suceed.

The baseball season is over, and football has officially begun.  The MS high school all-stars beat the AL stars on Saturday nite, and a number of USM signees had great nites on the field.  Coach Bower is stocking the cubard again it looks like so the Eagles should contend for another C-USA title in the fall.

Our current crew disagrees with past CPR team on several issues, one of them being Coach Eustachy.  Coach E is going to build a solid winning tradition at USM, and Reed Green is going to be a hotbed of basketball.  He is bringing in a solid class this year, and he did what he said he would do.  He got a European kid and went national with recuriting efforts this year.  He whipped North Carolina and Iowa for at least 2 kids.

Over the next weeks we'll report on the status of the Marcus Raines situation.  It looks like he will enroll in school here sometime this summer.  If you get the chance, you should check out the rivals.com radio interview he did.  It predicts a bright future here on campus.

The Editorial

Many of you are familar with the Toy McLauglin story, "Insomniac Eagle" from ET-land.  It is the view of the C-P Report staff that what he said on that board should not have made headlines.  Was it a bad joke in poor taste?  You bet.  Should it have made newsreels?  No way.  It is hard to find anyone that loves Southern Miss more than Toy.  He admits that his comment was in jest, and it should have been taken that way.  Thats the C-P R take.

I heard about the idea to name the food last week.  I don't have any ideas (sorry); I just don't know enough USM sports history.

New CP staff:

You are young, and you obviously don't understand why we are so upset about Mr. McLaughlin's "joke." Apparently you didn't read back far enough to the post by our friend Austin Eagle who was a student at UT-Austin. One day a man went up into their tower and started shooting people at random, the way Toy "joked" about doing. He murdered innocent students who were only walking between classes. It was a horrible, horrible day, and many of us on this board remember it vividly. Now every time I pass the Dome, I think about it.
It was more than bad taste. It was gross and cruel. No responsible person, much less the president of our Foundation, should make such a joke in a public forum. At any other institution, such a person would demonstrate his remorse by resigning. Your defense of him is inexplicable, and very disturbing. I suggest you do a Google search and read some background on the UT shooting. You may change your mind.

C-P,

I have enjoyed the CP report in the past.  However, on this one you are way off base.  What was wrong with Toy's statement (and why it SHOULD have made headlines and SHOULD have led to his ouster) was not the joke about climbing up on the dome and starting to shoot people.  We all knew that was his very weak attempt at humor.  What was wrong with the whole deal was that he lit into the faculty in an earlier post calling us all lazy good for nothin's (paraphrased of course).  Even that is an acceptable (though wrong) view in my book.  To each his own belief.  However, Toy was and is the head of the USM foundation.  For someone in that position to jump all over the faculty like ugly on an ape -- just did not get it in my book.  Had it happened anywhere else it would have made bigger headlines and resulted in a greater response against the idiot who made the statements to begin with.

I would say this is a new and improved CPR already. But, my young friends, I must warn you that you may not get the same reception that the old "staff" recieved. I will now have to take you under my wing so to speak and give you a few pointers of posting here. First off, in your first official post, you did not do any of the following:

- berate the baseball team

- call Larry Eustachy a drunk

- call Marcus Raines a serial killer

- call Giannini an idiot

- make fun of MM Roberts Stadium

- talk about how great Lu Harris is

- mention UMiss or Miss Stake

If you wish to remain popular here, please pepper in a few of these items.

Things that you must never do in your posts:

- defend anyone who supports Athletics

- say that you are actually a USM Sports Fan

- misspell any words, the grammer gestapo around here are unreal

- Say anything favorible of Toy McLaughlin, EagleTalk, R Giannini, C. Plamer, Joye Lee-McNelis or Lanny Mixon.

- Show any happiness for anything positive happening in USM Athletics.

- Check your facts regarding USM sporting records

My young friends if you follow these simple rules, you will be wildly popular among this crowd. If you choose to disregard these suggestions, a mob will be formed and you will be hauled into the faculty lounge in the COAL building and flogged by a group of angry thepians, which is not nearly as fun as being flogged by a group that rhymes with thespians.

Seeker,

Funny stuff.  As a card totin' USM fan for decades I got a good chuckle from your post.  Where is the flogging room in COAL?  Must have missed it.

It looks like the New Orleans Super Regional (coming to Tulane's Turchin Stadium this weekend) will be a preview of next year's C-USA Baseball Championship Game as the Green Wave will play host to the Rice Owls for a best-of-three series.

Just a point of correction, CSHTM:

Tulane has an option to host the regional at either Turchin Stadium or at Zephyr Field (home to the N.O. minor league team) and its not clear which theyll choose. Just thought I'd point this out. Zephyr Field holds alot more fans. I need to call the Felirse Building to ask if USM fans can get tickets to go root for the Green Wave.

Will the Aramark hotdog be called "the Shelby"?

I am excited about Tulane's success in baseball. I have been a USM fan for 20 years, but I cheer for our C-USA rivals whenever our interests don't conflict. I would be interested to see if tickets are available for the Tulane Super Regional. There'll be some great baseball played there, I can tell you.

From what I hear, if it is called the Shelby, it won't be a very big weenie.

Do I have to remind you that you can't believe everything you hear from Angie Dvorak?

Now I suppose you'll be trying to convince us the  "E.D."  program that has Shelboo so excited is actually Economic Development.

The Shelby Thames Super Burger (not really a super burger as it will have a big bun, lots of dressings and a very small, dry and tastless patty)

Ken Malone Salad

Mader Gumbo

Roy Klumb Dogs

And when you feel the need to go to the bathroom, there are special toilets called Newton Bowls!

I heard Ms. Dvorak left her husband when he got drunk at a party (a Christmas party I think), began thumping Lisa Mader in the back of the head with his hand and tried to hit on Larry Eustachy's girlfriend.

Which I can understand, because Eustachy's girlfriend is pretty hot.

I don't think these people are faculty. For what it's worth, I could not be less interested in the Dvoraks' marriage or Mr. Eustachy's love life, or any of that sort of thing as long as none of it occurs on campus or involves students. This whole culture of people's private lives being public information is disturbing, and I don't think we ought to encourage it.
