The NCAA regionals are underway, and the SEC is already storming through the first round. State took out Florida Atlantic 13-2 down here in South Florida. In other action, LSU (beat Marist), Arkansas (beat Miami OH) South Carolina (beat Michigan) and Auburn (beat USA) earned round one victories.
Meanwhile, in Oxford the USM Eagles fell 4-5 to the Oklahoma Sooners and move to the loser's bracket. There they will face the loser between Ole Miss and Maine.
Down in New Orleans the Tulane Green Wave blasted SUBR 17-7 and move into the winner's bracket to face the winner between Louisiana-Lafayette and Alabama (this is a nice regional).
In other action, Rice is losing 0-1 (in the 3rd) to Northwestern LA. In a shocker, Georgia Tech and Furman are tied 4-4 in extra innings.
The University of Miami is beautiful. More importantly it doesn't seem like a dysfunctional institution. Nice to see one in person every now and again.
Yestersay, I was in North Misssissippi and went to Oxford to attend our game against Oklahoma. The Ole Miss stadium is wondrful. I discovered in the progran that the City of Oxford built the stadiun for Ole Miss with a food and beverage tax and gave it to the University. It was obvious that the City of Oxford administration cared about Ole Miss and assisted UM in being competitive. It made me mad and embarassed that the Mayor of Hattiesburg was not supportive of our bond issue. I am not a SFT supportive, but the "anti-SFT" group hurts its cause being against improvements on our campus. Let's all move to Oak Grove and let Hattiesburg become become a little Jackson and die on the vine. Then Fairly and Dupree will be happy.
Baseball man, you're making two or three incorrect assumptions. First, you assume that the anti-SFT "cause" was united in its opposition to the bond issue. This is not the case. A significant number were either for it, or were genuinely perplexed as to how they wanted to vote. Another significant number on this board don't live in Hattiesburg. Second, you assume that the anti-SFT "cause" was against improvements to our campus. Also not true. They were for different improvements in different ways, and I can't refight that whole thing here. Third, you're comparing Hattiesburg to Oxford. I don't even know where to begin on that one . . .
Let's all move to Oak Grove and let Hattiesburg become become a little Jackson and die on the vine.
Jackson is one of the cities its size that still has a thriving downdown area. Compare Jackson's Capitol Street with Hattiesburg's downtown area. And just find me one area in Hattiesburg or surrounding area that compares with Jackson's magnificient residential areas. And if you don't understand that kind of talk, maybe you'll understand this, baseball man: Jackson has supported a professional baseball team since the 1940's-1950's (beginning with the Jackson Senators of the old Southeastern Baseball League years ago). Not to mention museums, art gallaries, and major auditorium for cultural, social, and sports events. Don't talk to me about Jackson "dying."
If USM's athletics needs city taxes to get along (or Ole Miss' for that matter), then there's a problem by definition. Passing a city sales tax increase to expand a 33,000 seat stadium that only 25,000 people sit in doesn't even need anti- groups --- as a plan, it's its own worst enemy.
The sales tax base in Jackson is heading South every day. The improvements in Jackson are in Madison and Rankin counties, not Hinds.
You bet there are improvements in Madison and Rankin, just as there are improvements at Oak Grove, Sumrall, and Petal. That's one of the benefits of being near a larger city. But you weren't talking about Madison or Rankin counties, or even Hinds county. You were talking about Jackson. And don't forget, Jackson has four good institutions of higher education within its borders: Millsaps, Belhaven, Mississippi College's Law School, and the University Medical Center. All of those schools are thriving. Hattiesburg has two (William Carey and USM) - and one of them (USM) is on the brink of disaster.
If you bothered to check the facts, you would know that the bond issue was not to support an expansion of the football stadium.

I suspected that Cox-Purvis was a Miss. State, SEC homer all along. Thanks for the confirmation. At least we know where your biased reporting and anti-USM slant is coming from.

Maybe the citizens of Oxford did not wee wee all over the Ole Miss faculty, call them names, and question their integrity. Funny how that works, if you do not call faculty names and denigrate them in public, they tend to be more receptive to working with the community.

This one is worth repeating. Given the new message boarding formating, it might have been embedded and missed.

We (the CPR) have one reporter in Coral Gables, and another giving us live info from the New Orleans Regional. The rest are waiting in Hattiesburg, and possibly headed to Oxford if things get hot up there. Calling us State fans is further off base than you know, "info" and "correction" and "Now we know".

If Hattiesburg is suffering from a lack of leadership, then it is lying in a bed of its own making. When White Hattiesburg decided to flee to Oak Grove, it handed the reins to Black Hattiesburg. Not racist -- just true. Now, White Hattiesburg wants control again, but it is too late. All this smearing of DuPree, Fairley, and others regarding their lack of support for USM athletics is just so many sour grapes. If USM had historically supported the community in a meaningful way (actively, not just passively) then the relationship between Hattiesburg and USM would not have been eroded so badly. By the way, it is the remnants of White Hattiesburg along with those who fled to Oak Grove that are causing all the unrest RE: faculty. I don't see Rev. Fairley talking bad about the faculty. I see White Hattiesburg doing all that. DuPree had a bond issue that would benefit USM and Hattiesburg, but Gianinni, Thames, and others wouldn't go for it. And don't talk to me about DuPree trying to get a bond issue for stuff that bond money can't be used to pay for -- all it takes is a little budgetary restructuring and everything's A.OK.
USM has never supported Hattiesburg in a meaningful way? What about all those millions of dollars brought into Hattiesburg by the University? If not for USM, Hattiesburg would be history.

I said actively, not just passively. USM's state of "being" is passive. USM's daily operations are passive. Given USM's past with certain Hattiesburg contingents (have you even read "Exit 13"?), USM should be going above and beyond to be inclusive to all of Hattiesburg. As it stands right now, USM should be renamed "Oak Grove Upper-Upper School (Grades 13-16)."
USM should be renamed "Oak Grove Upper-Upper School (Grades 13-16)."
When Mr. Hardy founded the town, he had no idea that it would breed a university would come to this. Maybe he should have put it a little further up the river. Maybe in Estachubuchie.
Don't let our jubilant attitude toward your defeat (2 and out!) in baseball up in Oxford give you the impression that, as MS IHL Board members, we don't have the best of intentions for the academic side of your fine little institution down there. Mississippi Southern's interest is first in our hearts and minds regarding every decision we make for it.
The "on campus' mentality at USM has been to be against everything in the City, including annexation. The faculty led the flight to Oak Grove in the 80's and 90's. You cannot have it both ways. Be for somehting other than the SFT issue.
If anyone sees or hears from Corky, please let him know that Dr. Thames is trying to get in touch with him. He can just come by the Jamestown mansion when he gets back to town. Dr. Thames will wait up for him. Thank you.

After that a$$-whuppin', this is all you can come back with?
You and yours say: "I love Shelby. He's great! Look at how good our athletics are!"
Then: mediocre football season, horrific basketball season, and an embarrassing performance to close out the baseball season. You athletic boosters should remember that you reap what you sow. One of these days you'll see the light about just what Thames has done to your precious athletics down there in the Dud City and you'll see that our boys Klumb and Ross have put you back in your place. If I were Gianinni, I'd be checking into stepping down to I-AA status. Maybe your guys could compete then.
Never mind, everyone. Just got word that Dr. Thames departed Hattiesburg in the USM plane just after the first inning today and is now in Oxford. He will collar Corky there and speak with him.
Ole Miss is beating Oklahoma 2-0 now. State just started against Miami. East Carolina is about to win their game, and TCU beat Stanford. Georgia Tech beat South Carolina earlier.

baseball man, both John Cox and Lance Pittman said during today's broadcast that Ole Miss' baseball complex is nice, but not near as nice as Pete Taylor Park. that said, we can leave taxes (and PTP) where they are now.

While Cox and Pittman will give the other team its due (i.e., will tell the truth), John Cox has been almost as bad as SFT when describing USM as "world class." I've been to Oxford and I live in Hattiesburg, and PTP is nothing compared to Swayze Field.
Ole Miss just beat Oklahoma, 7-3. One victory away from winning the regional. Arkansas is beating Texas handily, Tulane leads Alabama 5-2, Florida State leads Auburn 4-3, Florida and Tennessee are winning, and State trails Miami 1-0.
