from USM Mail "The location for the reception honoring all retirees for this year on Friday, June 3, at 3:30 p.m., has been moved to the Polymer Science Auditorium."
Will someone post about the reception? How many of the "honorees" actually show up?

This seems like an appropriate place to hold the reception, since so many people have retired thanks to a certain polymer scientist.

Don't forget the notice that the Union has no power. Maybe they had to move it for that reason.

Did anybody here attend this reception? How about a report on the event?

I don't know anything about the most recent reception, but I worked for the university for many years. About all that came from my efforts was a lousy silver-plated bowl.

really? you mean you didn't receive any pay for all those years?
A pittance of pay for a great deal of abuse. It didn't even out. Didn't even come close.
Flea Market - I know what you mean. A person does not enter academics for the money. But when the do enter academics, they expect to be treated like professionals. They expect the organization to subscribe to the same established principles that exist at other universities. They expect due process and academic freedom. Anything less than that is abuse. I was also bitten by the fleas.
In the past, my university (USM) would circulate a memo (or in recent years an email) listing the names of those retiring. That would allow faculty and staff to be aware of who was retiring in order to attend the ceremony to share the joy of those retiring. Under SFT, his university (Southern Miss) has done away with that courtesy.
I didn't attend the retiree reception in the Polymer Science Auditorium, but a report from a reliable source says the auditorium was full, but many in attendance were there to honor friends who were retiring. About half of the bowls were sat aside because recipients were not there to accept them. Russ Willis was MC and Grimes handed out the bowls for retirees from academic affaris. Joe Paul did Student Affairs, Cecil Burge did Research and Economic Development, and Gregg Lassen did Administration. SFT was not seen.
my department received a nicely printed card with the name of the retirees and the location/place of the reception. it was posted on our bulletin board.

I knew a retiree a couple of years ago, when presented the silver plated bowl, noticed the misspelling of her name...fortunately she had a good sense of humor and commented later of the university to continue to grow.
Ray's description is pretty accurate. I was there, as was Dave Beckett. I'd say the seats were 2/3 filled, with others standing in the back.
I did see Deans Gandy, Pierce , & Pood. I might have missed seeing Deans Fos and Doty.
The card listing retirees from the faculty went as follows:
David Creed (Chemistry) Jim Crockett (Accoutancy) Ray Folse (Physics) Hugh Garraway (Computer Science) Kim Herzinger (English) Sherman Hong (Music) Dennis Hunt (Criminal Justice) Julie Lytle (Marine Sciences) Thomas Lytle (Marine Sciences) Gerald Mattson (Polymer Science) Wilbur Moreland (Music) David Patrick (Geology) Lillian Range (Psychology) Margaret Smith (Ed Leadership & Research) Stanley Waldoff (Music) David Wheeler (English) Frank Whitesell (Economics, Finance & Int'l Business)
If I missed someone, my apologies.
Also retiring were some key folks in staff/support positions around the university.

Bill, would you mind listing some of those?
Whoa, I could get into trouble for listing just some. Here are the names, minus those above:
Mary Ellen Baker Lucy Betcher Debbie Blackwell Joe Brumfield Richard Canty Debbie Carter Phil Chedotal James Christmas Genda Cody Jerry Cole Inez Dishmon Newton Fawcett Joan Ford Ruby Garrard Mary Gobert Brenda Goza Diane Green Lucretia Hall Elain Hendricks Kay Hobson David Kinsey Regina Knight James Lea Grover Lowery Mary Lowry Cecil Marshall Joseph Matthews Lola McGee Lola Norris Sue Pace David Patrick Olivia Pigford Claude Reamous Jan Roberts Ray Scott Sandra Walters Harry Ward James Warren Betty Watson
What is interesting is the substantial n umber of these folks who are not at retirement age, who liked being at USM prior to SFT, and who decided they had to leave.
Who in the long list are faculty and who are staff? We've got to be nearing the last leg of PERS (people) by now.
No such luck. We've got 5 to 10 years more before they are all out of the system. With so many hires in he 80s, the exodus is not even close to over. USM, UM, MSU Airways still has a long time to fly.
