To the esteemed professor who began this thread, I offer this query. Why even associate with such an "institution" (to seriously abuse the word) when it rests right in the heart of the so-called "great state of Miss'sippi"? That this backward collection of wish-they-were intellectuals (dating all the way back to Faulkner and Welty, good people) have ever managed to rank among the likes of far more deserving universities in right-minded, progressive states is frankly a slap in the face to those of us who strive to fight the good fight in this diseased and conservatised nation.
Face it, people, your state is a malevolent blot on the United States. So are many others, but the topic is too vast to address here. I would instead inform the professor who initiated this thread that he's off to a good start by boycotting local businesses. I would then suggest that he start shopping his resume to more progressive markets and pick up sticks and move out of the hillbilly quagmire he's in. And then, I'd highly recommend that more and more faculty members do something similar, although I doubt it; aren't a good many of USM's "professors" actually graduates of the same institution at which they teach?
And don't bother flaming me, people. I won't be back to read it. I just wanted to do my part to see this "Hattiesburg" (which I've never had the misfortune of visiting, nor will I ever visit the great sinkhole of MS) lose its illusion of a true college town and sink back into the racist and backward truck-stop which it deserves to be, with your "USM" being reconfingured to a vocational school. You could teach tractor-driving, so not all is lost.
Those of you with truly higher aspirations need only move to somewhere more attuned to academia. It's a sacrifice, but you'd only be leaving behind intellectual failure and cultural embarassment.
I'd like to say "bite me" but it wouldn't be in keeping with the southern hospitality that often makes up for our lack of "intellectual failure and cultural embarassment." Please don't knock what you haven't tried.
Face it, people, your state is a malevolent blot on the United States.
Hello,
Haven't you heard the expression "If you can make it here, you can make it anywhere?" They're referring to Mississippi, dude. You sound like one pompous*** who struck out in your endeavors here (whatever they were), tucked your tail between your legs, and split. You say you won't visit this site again to see any responses to your post. Yes you will. I know people just like you. You're reading this comment right now.
You know, I think that was a put on just to get us all riled up. I think Mr./Ms. Sage had a tongue firmly planted in the cheek. Congrats to the board that it didn't work. Y'all sure are a civilized lot. And AAUP Sage, next time be a little subtler and maybe we'll fall for it.
He sure knows a lot about us for somebody who's never been here. He must have watched that episode of ER that had Hattiesburg somewhere in the Delta, with third-world medical facilities.
I'm still trying to make sense of "malevolent blot"
AAUP Sage wrote: [Not a whole lot to argue with in the content of this post--just a few questions about style. First, since this is such a personalized view, I should think the poster would not claim to represent the general view of his organization, the AAUP; so really, he should shorten his name to Sage--heck, while we're at it, let's shorten it to Rage.]

[So is he calling Faulkner and Welty "good people," or is he calling the rest of us wish-we-were intellectuals "good people"? Also, is Rage a Brit ("conservatised")? If so, might we be forgiven if we don't give a flip about his opinion? If, on the other hand, he is a REAL American intellectual, can't he have the courtesy to use American spelling?]
I would then suggest that he start shopping his resume to more progressive markets and pick up sticks and move out of the hillbilly quagmire he's in.
[Does Rage mean "pull up stakes"? Or were we planning a game of Pickup Stix to celebrate our departure?]
And don't bother flaming me, people. I won't be back to read it.
[a. I agree with the other poster that you'll be baaaaaack! But also, b. sometimes we do things to entertain ourselves and others.]
with your "USM" being reconfingured to a vocational school.
[I especially appreciate this formulation, since, indeed we have already been given the finger by IHL and have no doubt they can do it again. We will duly attribute your neologism "reconfingured" at the appropriate time.]
[We thank you again for enlightening us about our home and our culture. But, hey, catfish is good. Now back into your cage, Rage, reconfingure yourself amongst your trollish chums. You've had your outing for the day.]
