Bill Smith, Grad Director, back to the faculty. Alvin Williams, marketing chair, back to faculty. Francis Daniel, faculty, up to Grad Director. Barry Babin, faculty, up to marketing chair. Harold Doty, dean, moves to faculty........(stay tuned for rest of the story)

You all know my feelings of Dr. Williams, but at the same time, Dr. Barry Babin is a fine professor, and I think has the makings of a very fine Chair. He has big shoes to fill, but should do well in his new position.
Barry Babin will make a decent chair. Unfortunately, the process was run in the SFT manner with little or not input from faculty. The outcome would have been the same, but it would be nice if somewhere in USM things were handled as they would be at a real university.

It sounds like the outcome was just fine but the process was flawed. Is the USM administration still going along its merry way?
Spring/Summer 2005 in the COB: Bill Smith, Grad Director, back to the faculty. Alvin Williams, marketing chair, back to faculty. Francis Daniel, faculty, up to Grad Director. Barry Babin, faculty, up to marketing chair. Harold Doty, dean, moves to faculty........(stay tuned for rest of the story)
If things go a certain way, the swaps above are only half the total, maybe less. More to come.........

Seeker, don't fret just yet. You may again speak to Dr. Williams as he occupies a position on high. Patience, grasshopper.
Once again, we have the folks in COAL being good colleagues and keeping the searches and successes of their friends in confidence. When they leave, they are mourned and the overall dysfunction of the university is blamed. In business, we have the mystery and the scandal...what is the deal?

If you were in the CBA, CBED or what ever they call it now, you might have had your ass kicked a few times by the "bosses" too.

Everything in the original post has happened except Doty going to the faculty.
Doty did "hand pick" Barry Babin for the position, and no official "search" was held.
Laurie Babin is a faculty member in Barry Babin's new department. She holds no official administrative position, however, she is now apparently ex-officio co-chair of the Marketing and Management department in the COB.
Doty is strongly rumored to be not long for the Dean's position.
Alvin Williams has had an opportunity to place himself in the running for Dean before and choose not to apply. While anything is possible, I get the feeling that he wants to spend more time with his family, friends, and his church.

One of my best friends is an academic headhunter. She called me the other day to ask about CoB Dean Duane Harold Doty. I surmised that his job search may have hit high gear. She promised to check on whether an "order" has been placed with her firm for a Business Dean for USM.
