A colleague in another college on campus gave me a one-liner that encapsulates the focus of being an successful administrator or a successful "person in charge of others". The advice was, "Remember that every day you are in charge, you must get people working under your supervision to give you their discretionary effort." His point was that if employees give you the minimum you make them do, you will go bankrupt.
