Or sitting the child facing the wall in the corner of the room for a brief spell. Teachers were doing that more than 50 years ago. Who changed all of that?

stern school officials who needed to develop a vigorous unsystematic strategy for correcting ill-mannered students.

maybe it has something to do with the "the harder we are on children, in order to correct them in the error of their ways, the more disciplined they will be" mentality.
