Listened to the USM/OU game on OU sports radio Friday. The sportscasters commented on the fact that Sooner fans would root for Cowboys (Oklahoma State) unless they (the Sooners) were playing them but that the Mississippi teams (USM, UM, MSU) would root for anybody else. They didn't understand it.
I think you can answer that question for yourself. When you compete are their large crowds there to watch?
Yes indeed. Hunreds of thousands. And all over the world. Entire television networks are devoted to the cause.
Do you get asked to sign a ball, program, jersey, hat after your event is over?
Come to think about it . . No. But I used to trade comic books and baseball cards when I was growing up. Do they take those signed baseballs, programs, jerseys, and hats to the bars and discuss them with their friends?

Ok, so you must be a futbol player. I know a few of the young ladies that are on the team and they are great. Very nice, hard working, intelligent young ladies. But, I do not consider myself a soccer fan, probably because I never played the game growing up and still don't really know the rules.
I root for all of Southern Miss' teams, because they represent Southern Miss. I hope each of our teams wins every game they play. But, I will admint it's hard to me to really watch a game that I have never played.

You've put your finger on one thing I have never understood about Mississippi and one thing which is a root cause of our present troubles. For some inexplicable reason, loyalty to the college you attended always precedes loyalty to your state as a whole. Thus Klumb et. al. would send a whole university down the tubes in order to protect the interest of their alma mater. It's crazy. There is no sense of the "greater good" of the state as a whole.

As far as cheering for UM or MSU, I'll start as soon as they start playing USM home and home in football and basketball. UM and MSU decided that they could choke USM back to I-AA in football if they simply stopped playing us, and it almost happened. They tried to destory USM athletics, and you expect us to cheer for them.

No Not Now, Not Ever
Why would Ole Miss and State play USM home and home? They don't play other schools similar to USM like Jackson State, Alcorn State, MVSU, or even Mississippi College in football or basketball. There's not enough room on the schedule to play all the pee-wees. If they played USM, they'd have to play some of these others, and, with NCAA restrictions on the number of games per sport per season, this would hurt their national rankings, since Ole Miss and State are the only two state universities currently capable of competing for championships at the national level.

That's because there are different rivals in Oklahoma and Texas. An Aggie from Texas A&M would never root for a Longhorn team. The University of Texas Longhorns don't really care about A&M, but would never ever root for the Sooners. The Texas/OU rivalry is just too strong.
